MARKUS SCHOPP PRESS CONFERENCE Interviews Speaking to the local and national press for the first time since joining Barnsley, Markus Schopp says he didn’t have to think twice before making the switch to South Yorkshire. Continue reading on the official site...
Impressive. Talks a good game and came across very confident. Good first impression and it'll be interesting to see how he's got us playing tomorrow
A very good interview and he coped well with the often rude and inane questions that are put to people. Some questions could have come off this forum. No Coach is ever going to say which players are leaving or who he would like to buy,so why ask the question. I felt some of Andy's and Doug's questions, he dealt with politely. Also, you can hear the difference in culture, in Britain we are obsessed with target setting, whatever the industry. The Look North guy, asked what his target was after what Ismael achieved last season. The target as always is to not get relegated, I don't think the ownership set positional targets to the coaches, we are too small a club. The Yorkshire post and Calendar asked pertinent questions and were respectful. I was surprised no one picked up on how well Austria had done at the Euro's, how Austrian football was improving and players were playing in other countries. Especially compared to other Home nations. No one asked about his playing career, who is role models and mentors were. The problem with UK journalists is that they don't seek to inform and educate but rather have a narrative already written and then try to make the subject fit it. An opportunity missed and certainly will make Markus wary in the future.
A positive and really interesting interview. Calm but guarded. Confident but realistic. Said a lot without giving lots away and not filled with cliches. What I think was most interesting was steering away from suggesting a system that will be played and that things are being worked out. That's a very different stance to our last two coaches in particular who were very rigid in their systems and styles. A very good first impression and I'm hopeful we'll see something more pleasing on the eye under his tenure.
You're absolutely bang on the banana. The stories are already written and journos just want to fill in the blanks. Sadly I think in today's clickbait market there is pressure on journos to get website hits and they seem to believe that the headline "SCHOPP TARGETS PLAYOFFS AND WANTS MOWATT REPLACEMENT" gets more clicks than "Schopp played for the Austria national side and once scored a header against Juventus." Very sad, I'd have loved to hear more about him, his opinions and philosophies. I guess there's always time for more interviews But
another thing, they obviously have their prepared questions but often the journalist before will have asked the same or a similar question. Rather than adapting they go on with their pre-planned question anyway.
This seems to be endemic in journalism, I honestly don’t think they even listen to the questions and answers and are just waiting to say what they’ve already written down. It’s very annoying, I get that it’s an industry under pressure and that probably become a regional journalist isn’t the competitive job it once was, but still.
The question about who our rivals will be this season was ridiculous. It sounded like something straight off Football Manager.
