I'd quite happily relive anything from 78/79 to 81/82. I don't mind which one. They were all good seasons.
1999/2000 so entertaining... 2018/2019 close - was losing a bit of faith after Morais - was a chore making the journey. Got my love back under Stendel
I was out around Christmas time talking football with some fellow BFC fans and stated that if Barnsley won the Football league trophy I'd have my ear pierced (I'm in my late 60's, so a bit of a statement to make) Any way mates said they would hold me to it, but what would I do if we were to get promoted. "I'll get a tattoo" says I. The rest as they say is history.
Either the season under Bassett 1999/00 or stendels unbeaten at home all season and promoted automatically playing some great stuff.
90-91 season. Not for footballing reasons. Just turned 18. Went to every home match and away bar one. Plenty of overnighters. Went with a few mates but mainly blokes on the Dards Reds at Cudeth. Proper made me grow up and was certainly an eyeopener. Weekends away in London etc. Very very happy days.
One of my recent favourites was the second half of the 2012/13 season when we stayed up under Flitcroft. The team were winning football matches against teams in the promotion hunt at Oakwell, matches that they really had no business winning if you take into account the start we had made to that season. Chris O Grady was immense, and the rendition of three little birds being belted out around Oakwell as the team were hanging on for points was electrifying. I also recall how close it was at the bottom of the table, it didn’t matter how much of a run we put together, the teams around us kept picking up the points too. The last few minutes of that season, playing ‘keep ball’ against Huddersfield until the ref blew up to confirm our salvation was one of the strangest feelings I’ve ever experienced as a reds fan.
Either the Stendel promotion season or 99/00 (apart from the play off final) Brucie was awesome that season!
I enjoyed 06/07, beating Hull early doors, the crazy away game at Burnley, beating Leeds at home, away day in sunny Southend, beating Stoke live on sky! The demolition of Hull at home on a cold Tuesday night thanks to the Hungarian front two.
It has to be 96/97 , promotion to the top flight had only ever been a dream for me , to watch us in the depths of the 4th division to seeing Clint Marcelle sealing promotion , tears rolling down my face , fans hugging, singing , crying & the shear ectasy when the final whistle went , the raw emotion , these are all memories that I will take to the grave , nothing can ever top that for me .
81/82 marginally overall . 97-98 for the away days / positive image of the club. Last season for massive improvement / achievement in the face of all odds. In 81/82 Barnsley were not as small a club financially. Attendances were roughly in line with our league position via a vis. Football in 81/82 sublime.
1981/2 for me. Watching king Ronnie et al tearing up the 2nd division. Bear in mind that we would have got in the playoffs had they existed and only finished 4 points off promotion to division 1, after promotion the previous year after 22 years in the 3rd and 4th divisions. Oh and the magnificent League Cup run.
It was that tight at the top of the 2nd Division in 1981/82, that whilst it feels like the defeat to Grimsby sealed our fate, the result that effectively did for us was a 1-0 home defeat to Norwich, who were promoted in 3rd position. Had we beaten them, we would have finished 3rd rather than 6th, above Sheff Wed on goal difference I think.
