So choosing to stay at home is the same as ‘house arrest’ ??!

Exactly, now I'm not saying that's a good thing, it's is sadly part of life.

Fair enough it isn't I accept that. But you were suggesting they should choose to so what's the implications if they choose not to.

And like I’ve said; if people choose not to get the vaccine there’s a consequence, if people choose to overeat, there’s a consequence.

So why pretend to sit on the fence when the reality is that you simply don’t understand the point.

    Choice = consequence.

We should start weighing fatties outside restaurants and offer them a restricted menu if they have a high BMI.....
Actually you might be onto something ;)

The odds of dying were cut significantly when the government made it law to wear seatbelts. I remember people complaining then about freedom of choice.

I do wish we wouldn't make things appear to be worse than they are or take things to such extremes. There's validity in various stances, but I don't think it helps when we describe very moderate measures as "lockdown" or a handful of restrictions as the worst thing there's even been.

The government has created an absolutely impossible situation. Social distancing and using face masks benefit most from large compliance yet now, people have every right by law to reject those simple and basic actions.

I fully accept and appreciate exemptions, but I also accept there are over 3.5m people who have very valid reasons to be extremely cautious as it could risk their lives. There is also their immediate family and support mechanisms. So when we consider all of them, that could easily be a quarter or more of the population.

Frankly, I think this week will turn out to be the week where the government loses control. Not that they've had it especially from their actions and words, but they've had some decent levels of support, acceptance and compliance regardless, but it just looks like chaos now.

You'll get no argument from on the government chaos.

Well of course there aren’t any. Hence my suggestion that more draconian measures will be introduced if things go badly over the next few months. For example, the reason why France is on the Amber-plus list is due to the Beta variant, which appears to evade the Astra Zeneca vaccine (to a worrying extent). Wholesale infection leads to variants, some of which can be dangerous, and that is why the next few weeks/months are so important. Including vaccine take-up.

Given the overall low vaccine roll out world wide then if that's the case vaccine passports ect will make no difference. We would need to shut off out borders New Zealand style for a prolonged period of time.

Which makes it all the more frustrating that in wealthy countries, where there is general access to vaccines, some people decide to exempt themselves. The rest of the world, meanwhile, would love to be so lucky.

    There will always be some.

I'm double vaccinated & totally in favour of people getting the jab. It makes very good sense for all but a tiny minority. Some of those will have medical reasons I suspect & I have to respect that.

But if the variant doomsday scenario come to pass then only closing the borders will do

Many scientists do indeed take that view. However, we should still try to suppress the virus where we can.

I know a couple of people who have decided to opt out on the basis that the vaccines have not been thoroughly tested.

If you are in the young demographic that is an argument. I'm not sure for older people.

What I mean by that is there is a danger of birth defects that is not tested.

Same age as me so definitely not young!! Pregnant women are currently being advised to have the vaccine.
