Release all restrictions, cases drop like a stone

What a surprise. The lockdown mob would have you believe this time with their family has been good for children though.

That’s because they live in this neoliberal bubble that does not have any concept of working class struggle.

I would love to take you up on this, but I am well aware of the suffering during this pandemic. All I am saying is this is affecting everyone and everybody, irrespective of class.

 

I've deliberately stayed away from them mega threads or even engaging in this topic because I don't know enough, have been lucky that lockdown hasn't massively impacted my life & I *think* I broadly agree with the concept of lockdowns. I think they've been done badly but I understand why they're a tool that's been deployed.

Anyway, genuine question - isn't the fact cases are going down after a massive spike in them now likely to be because of a number of factors? Like people not getting tested, a critical mass of vaccinations, a significant number of people now having antibodies etc? I'm not sure how you can correlate a dropping case volume to people now not wearing masks & mixing more freely without acknowledging the previous? That's not me saying you can't/shouldn't btw.

For the record - my wife, 3 month old son & brother in law all tested positive two weeks ago. Little lad taken in to A&E with laboured breathing. All recovered and ok now but not a nice experience. My wife especially has been incredibly careful throughout this thing so the concept that if restrictions hadn't been there then she wouldn't have caught Covid and passed it on to our baby is something I just don't understand.

I honestly don’t understand how anybody can say this hasn’t affected the working classes in the most overt way.

 

Listen to what I am saying, you said this was not affecting the middle classes, I am saying it has. I agree that working classes have been affected, probably more so, but to say that they are the only ones affected is wrong.

 

I don’t tend to get too involved in these sort of posts but I’m confused how anyone can claim with confidence to be right over this issue either way?
Surely there are too many variables and unknowns.

Is the drop in cases as a result of change in policy?
Is it because a large proportion of the potential most at risk ran their course (good or bad)
Is it because millions have had vaccines?
Is it because generally most of the whole country have changed their general approach towards hygiene and social interaction?
Is it because of all the above?

 

Maybe it is wrong in hindsight. I apologise for what I said, it was said in the heat of the moment. I’m sorry that your wife has been struggling during this. I genuinely hope you get through this okay. It’s just an incredibly awful situation for all involved and I just want everyone to be alright.

 

Like with anything complicated, the simple answer is always likely to be, on any question 'it's complicated'.

Tests is an interesting one, especially as lots of healthy people are having to now test regularly to go about their new lives so you could argue it's an unscientific measure & inflating things when until recently guidance was usually only to test if symptoms or test twice weekly if work required it.

So - people spending time outside, which the government and scientific community advocated for has had an impact. Maybe the big spike could be to do with the poor weather of a few weeks back? Contributing factor.

The hospitality thing is interesting btw. My assumption would be that lots of people who were happy to go regularly into venues during this aren't likely to be those *that* keen on using the app. If so, doesn't that mean that it'd be really hard to prove either way if hospitality had an impact?

 

Mate, no offence taken. We both have strong views on this subject, and I for one would love to ensure that all people have an equal chance in life and have the same opportunities. I am fortunate to have a good job, but I can assure you that I despair at the way this country is being levelled up, or lack of. I despise the way this government treat the working classes and the poor, my parents struggled to bring up me and my 4 siblings and I will never forget where I can from.

 

I feel like most of us on here broadly agree with a lot of subjects mate. Honestly, I’m sure if we went for a pint we would get on. Once again, sorry for overreacting on things. I truly hope things are good for you and yours going forward

At the end of the day I like to believe that most people, regardless of where you stand on lockdowns etc, just want the same thing, to prevent as much suffering as possible.

 

I honestly think we would get on, it sounds like we both have the same principles. Plus we support the super reds. My wife has struggled and it has been hard, but she is getting better thank you. No need to apologise either, I honestly have very thick skin, and lots of it according to the wife

 

Not a problem. I'm just interested in any and all reports and studies.
