Does anybody remember the goal, many years ago, that wasn't?

I cannot recall where it was, it may have been Walsall, it was certainly an away game, but an opposition player scored a perfectly good goal, a screamer on grass level that went in, hit a wall immediately behind the net and rebounded so quickly that the ref thought it must have gone wide.
    It was not given.
    How we celebrated !!

I remember Being at Rochdale when Peter Springett was in goal and their player blasted a rocket that went in hitting the back stanchion and zooming back out and ref gave nothing

Also happened at Oakwell in a 2-2 draw with Norwich.I'm pretty sure it was a shot from Gwyn Thomas which it the stanchion and flew out of the goal. The referee initially waved play on but I think the linesman got involved and the goal was given.

Was that the last away game of the season? Did we draw?

I was there that day and as soon as the play went up the other end Peter was asking the crowd if it went in.

I remember Mark Hughes doing it at Southampton's old ground. He hit the shot so hard it was still hard to tell it went in on slow motion replays

And Springett knew exactly what had happened and pretended nothing had. If televised it was 4th division goal of the season. And the half time pie was magnificent.

Yep, exactly how I remember it. Play had resumed before the poor ref had time to think.

Same thing happened at Leicester in a cuptie way back in the 60s. It was either Andy Lochhed or Allan Clarke who blasted a screamer past Roy Ironside.
Tinribs turned just in time to catch the ball on its way back out, and as he shaped to chuck the ball back to the centre for a kick off he saw the ref waving play on! I think it might have been Jack Taylor...

It happened more than once at Rochdale and involving more than just us. The issue was that there wasn't much space between the goalposts and the terrace behind the goal. Some goals touched the net and may not have crossed the line. I think that the stanchions may have been angular, so a shot could hit what was a metal upright stanchion and look as though it had hit the post and come back out. I recall that this happened at Spotland more than once.

Or do you mean one that wasn't but was allowed? Huddersfield in the glorious 1996/1997 season, went in direct from a throw in. Can't be a goal but was given.

I still think Watson should have just turned it over the bar. I feel like we should all know better than to trust the judgement of the referee.
