We don't seem to like playing spinners these days. Root can be ok, but he's not consistent enough to be classed as a 5th bowler.
It's not the bowling department where the problem lies. If we can get close to 300 on this pitch we've got a chance.
If you're going to struggle to reach fifty for the loss of a couple of wickets by lunch you might as well play the likes of Malan, Duckett, Banton and Hales and be 50/2 after half an hour instead.
I couldn't agree more. You could add Vince to that list too. At least it would be entertaining. Does Sibley know which end of the bat to hold?
Sibley shouldn't be playing, he's too easy to keep quiet, mainly because he can only play leg side. All well and good getting to the second new ball only 1 or 2 wickets down, but if you've only scored 160, you'll soon be in trouble. I'd replace Sibley with Hameed, and would've played a spinner rather than Bairstow. Probably Moeen to bat at 7.
I don't have a problem with a cautious start when you're facing Bumrah and the ball hooping round corners. (Though I'm not especially impressed with our batting line up either) I'd much rather that players try and bat to tire the bowling unit and soften the ball so its easier for others. I'd rather be 60-2 playing sensibly at lunch instead of 100-7 with wafts a plenty.
Nothing wrong with a cautious start, but Sibley just bats at the same rate throughout, whereas the likes of Cook or Trott at least had a second, maybe third gear to go into once they'd got in.
