Yeah, from what I read, there are some financial regulations set by the league that prevent this from happening. I think it's a shame, it would have been nice to see him spend his whole career at Barcelona. Not that I care about the club really, it would just feel somehow wrong if he ends up in Man City or PSG or something...
Barca needed to sell players to be able to do it. Can't remember if it was some version FFP or a embargo based on finances at the club. Someone might have a link to the details but it was something along those lines, because his contract had expired he would be classed as a new signing or something.
It wasn’t really a pay cut. They spread the same amount over more (five in total) years, with him expected to go to the MLS after a couple of years or retire and become a club ‘ambassador’. I know he’s an amazing player, but he’s a greedy lovely person as well.
Bielsa couldn't convince him... could he? On the other hand it might scupper Kane's move to Man City if Pep thinks he could cut it in the Premier League for a couple of years...
