It's crap news but take the positive from it that at least you know - its trials like this that move the medicine. The worst thing that she could have done was get double-jabbed and felt invulnerable.

My wife's mate has had a similar test out of the Royal Marsden with similar results.

I genuinely don't know. I'd guess short term, it would be a case of watch trials on third jab same or mixed boosters and if that gives any sort of level of protection, or see if any other style of vaccine comes out that stands up to it more robustly. But thats not going to be known until there is a sample audience to test and study.

The only two other scenarios I can imagine (though I must admit, my thinking isn't quite as clear as it might normally be) are that herd immunity succeeds and it doesn't morph again so she gets protection that way, from others, or she stops taking the drug that affects her immune system, but that obviously has massive downsides and would hugely affect her quality of life.

All we can do in the meantime is try and stay away from people as much as we're able.

So sorry to hear this horrible news, old mate. But saying sorry seems so ineffectual and pointless. All I can do is pass on the best wishes of my family & I to you and yours.

Which all makes it even more imperative that everyone gets double jagged.
Best wishes and good luck to your wife mate.

I guess that means you are effectively in permanent self-isolation. Must be devastating for you mate. Is she down to have an alternative vaccine? One that works better with the drugs...

I think its all too early to know what the next steps will be. I've not seen a specific study as yet that crosses over a booster jab/ mixed jab with specific immunosuppressant regimes, so i think its likely she is one of the guinea pigs to test things out. Ironic that the most danger she is in is getting to these places to take part.

But yes, I think the first part of your post is where we are for the foreseeable. The quickest way out of this for us will be for covid to collapse or global herd immunity to win out. It's not a huge ask, is it? ;-)

I think we’re just about to be in the same boat. Will is waiting for an MRI for his final diagnosis and then will be almost certainly be starting on immunosuppressants too. Thankfully, he is able to work from home but from September I’ll be heading back into the Covid hotspot that is a secondary school where zero restrictions are now in place. I’m not really sure what’s going to happen, I can’t afford to quit my job, however crap the pay is. This has all just come out of the blue so we can’t get our head around it yet.

Hi mate - is it the Clarity IBD study group that she's in? If so I'm in the same one. Happy to compare notes if it helps you process things at all...

The study I'm on is looking at both illness acquired and vaccine generated immunity whilst on intravenous immunesuppressants (which I have every six weeks)

My wife works in a school as well. Again, happy to share experiences if it helps.

Really sorry to hear that and fingers crossed for your other half.

There is some better news that there is variation across the study depending on your t cells, the vaccines you've had but mostly which drugs you're taking.

There were people with 30-40% immunity combined with good T cell levels, and while not ideal, it's still something as a base.

If ever you want to chat to someone in a potentially similar boat. Don't be shy.

Thanks for that. I think Clarity is the Exeter one from memory? This one was out of Hammersmith (she's not shared the name of it) and is in two parts, but no guarantee of the second, I think that she's got no antibodies at all rules her out of the second phase. It's likely fairly similar, if not some basis of collaboration given its for fusion style immunosuppressants.

Much appreciated. I suspect it will likely be a few weeks before she shares anymore or is willing to discuss it any more. She likes to try and retain the belief she is bomb proof!!!

    Thanks again.

Sorry to hear that pal, take care of your wife and yourself . My daughter in law has rheumatoid arthritis, isolated for 18 months, double jabbed asap then got a letter from the hospital last week to say her vaccination was no good so it's back to isolation again until they work out the next step.
    She's utterly demoralised.
Chin up the pair of you and good luck!

Sorry to hear about your daughter in law and hope she's ok.

And thanks for your kind words.

We'll be fine.... Dishoom bacon naan rolls have just been delivered for tomorrow mornings breakfast (wiped to within an inch of their lives, obviously!) ... so all is fine with the world again!

I've had similar news. I had chemo and it has basically wrecked my immune system. I knew it had because I've kept being colonised by simple bugs that can't be eradicated. I had both Pfizer injections and then an antibody test. This came back as zero. What it means is that I've got no immunity to anything. The best hope I've been offered is that a booster in the autumn might kick start some activity, but in the long term, it's a matter of carry on isolating and wait for the science to come up with something that will give me and apparently a million more the hope of being able to lead a normal life. I won't be at Oakwell for obvious reasons, which is heart-breaking after over 65 years of continuous attendance when I've barely missed a match. I had hope to be able to watch games via the computer, but that's not possible either. I'm not moaning about it; there are people who are dead from this. I knew three of them. I've reserved my seat again and have donated the money to the Club. They did ask me, via the magnificent Beth, if I wanted a refund, but I'd like to be just a little part of it. So, there it is.

    Really sorry to hear that.

I had multiple goes starting this thread and deleted it a couple of times before hitting post. Aside from the compassion some have shown and a couple of long private messages some have taken the time to put together, I'm glad I did post it.

Not because of the many sympathies and warm messages. But because it shows there are others in a similar position and that we're not alone. I'm lucky, and feel a bit of an imposter that I'm not the one directly affected by the news. But it is someone i love dearly, and at times the thought of inadvertently harming them through carrying a virus that may not affect me at all is something that has weighed very heavily.

If ever you want to unload or share anything. Don't hesitate to.

    Nobody is alone.

I's that due to the drugs she's taking for the arthritis? A horrible situation to be in but if the vaccine is taken up by those who can have it then hopefully she'll be able to go out and about again in the not too distant future.
