@YTBFC - get it done. Please. And apart from the applause, how good would it be to have everyone chanting “Winnie, Winnie, Winnie” as we always did whenever he went up for a corner. I do, however, expect to have something in my eye at that point.
Big Eric was my Barnsley football hero - I remember us being 2-0 down v Watford & Eric going up front for the 2nd half & scoring a hat trick!
I can't make it next week but will be clapping from my desk. I remember talking to him one day outside the old Reds Superstore in the Alhambra when I was about 14 and me mum had taken me in to buy a new shirt. Proper childhood memory. I would love to see some footage posted if possible.
Wouldn't it be great if the ref blew his whistle with the ball in midfield somewhere to halt the game for a minute or so. The players could then join in. Games are stopped all the time because a player is pretending to be hurt so it should happen for something like this. It would be too distracting to carry on playing with maybe 15,000 people standing up clapping and chanting his name. Eric Winstanley was a major part of the history of this club and his memory will live on for ever so I think it should be given top priority as we didn't get chance to do it last season.
Throughout his career with us he was applauded many many times, (sometimes for hoofing the ball out and over Grove street school), to be able to clap the legend for the last time is a honour. Thank you Eric for many fond memories.
Eric was awesome my best center half at Oakwell as far as I am concerned. His partnership with Pat Howard was immense.
I'll be honoured and proud to take part, in memory of a true club legend. I'll also be remembering what a truly wonderful son he has, too.
Are club doing a minutes silence before the game they usally do,if so the announcer could mention it then all fans will no,loads of people dont go on internet.ill be clapping pal spent many a night in longbow, hope it's geting a little easier for you and your family kid.
I'll probably not be there Saturday but wherever I am I'll make sure I do it myself and if I'm working at pub I'll make sure the punters do aswell.
Will be an absolute honour to remember a bloke who gave his all for our football club today, a bloke who was with us through some our lowest lows and highest highs, rooted himself in our community. And never forgot the bigger picture with football. “We’ve always had ambitions to do this. And it’s a dream. But dreams can come true. And I’ll tell you what, at the bottom end of it as well, there’s a lot of clubs – your Doncaster’s, your Rotherham’s, your Rochdale’s of this world, we’ve been there. There’s no reason why they can’t get there as well. And I think it’s great for all the smaller clubs, or so called. But we’re not small anymore. We’re Barnsley. We’re Premiership. And we deserve it.”
You’ve made me cry you git. Thanks to all today. I wore sunglasses to keep it in. My old man was proud to be from Barnsley and to represent our club. You Reds
Fitting and deserved tribute mate, hero thi fatha , played a massive part in our ascension to the premier league in bringing all those young quality players through from the youth teams.......one of our own was Mr Winstanley................sithi.
What a pleasure to be part of a wonderful ovation loved and appreciated by all supporters regardless of if they saw him play or even saw him coach.
Eric was one of the reasons I support Barnsley not anyone else. I never saw him play but loved his presence round Oakwell and the pride he had in his team. The best of us and sorely missed by the football family as well as his real family. “Man can have no greater life than giving 90 minutes for his friends”.
Clappedal on mins for big Eric Winstanley and thete was a standing ovation too. Fine tribute to a fine man. A Barnsley lad through and through. R.IP. Eric
