    On a more serious note, the word "curry" is matched in inappropriateness by the term "ex-Pat" when describing immigrants from Britain.

    I went to Colombo for 9 days and barely ate owt, every fcking thing blew my head off. One night I ordered plain chicken noodles as I thought that might be bearable, safe to say it wasn’t. Lived off crisps, fruit and kfc in the end.

    That is actually a British dish made up sometime in the 60s or 70s.

    We went with the German Kraft bar which as you know is brewed on site (it was out in the open so felt better than going in the undercover bit)... they had a hopfenweisse (i can't tell you how much I miss draft pulled wheat beers from Europe!) so we went with that. The range was less than I recall from last time I went, but we're probably talking 2 years before and around Oktoberfest when they did loads of one offs including a fig marzen.

    We'd lined this particular walk because there are a few places that may have been viable, especially on a Sunday. Theres "Tap In" which is well of the eaten track, top end of Walworth on a side road in all the new developments round there begin Elephant and Castle. There's an Antic pub that hasnt got a kitchen so is pretty quiet, thats on Walworth Road but cant recall the name, and then there is Elephant, another Antic I think. Range from memory was pretty limited and the seating area fronts onto the old roundabout, so not a place we fancied really.

    We're mulling over a walk on Sunday that may clip Vauxhall, and that opens up the potential of Mother Kellys. But last time we went, it had started getting very popular, so I think that might disappoint and just be too busy.

    Would love to go to Cask, or One Mile Ends place opposite the famous pub where the Krays did one of their murders. Fabulous Sunday lunches.... if they haven't change at all. But they are both very much indoors and sadly, even if their were few in, we just cant risk it with the news my wife had last week. One day though, fingers crossed.

    On a trip to Canada in '82, me and my kid sister tried every burger / fast food outlet at a local mall that you could imagine. Towards the end we simply wanted a good old Chinese curry.
    We walked into the shop - it looked like a Chinese, it smelt like a Chinese and the menu was presented on the wall in the typical larger-than life manner with the usual 100+ options.

    But there was no curry on it, and barely a single dish we would have recognised in the UK.

    Went to Sri Lanka in 2014 and I thought their food was out of this world, you got a tray with several dishes in spicy sauce, popadoms, pickles, naan and rice, absolutely wonderful. However the best meal I had there was a steak, odd when you consider the traffic hold ups caused by sacred cows wandering down the roads...

    Couldn't care less about the culture of food, when I order it I do so because i like the taste, where its from, or which 100km bracket it's originally from in India is irrelevant for me, the curry's we get over here are made to suit Our palet, their is so much difference in the food between a British Indian restaraunt and a restaraunt in India, very much chalk and cheese

    Worked in Pakistan for a short while. Remember the first internal flight I took from Lahore to Islamabad. Took off about 8am and just after the plane levelled out, the curtains were pushed back by a woman in a sari. She and a couple of other stewardesses wheeled trolleys down the aisle stacked with little silver dishes of curry/ Asian cuisine – naans, chapatis the job lot. Now that’s what I call breakfast.

    I think it's a shame that some restaurants (and the level of how much "some" is has varied over the years) tone down their dishes, and I find it even more sad when its done in that cuisines country of origin. I do love food, and I like it to be authentic so I can try it and see if I like it. The flip side is you have things you don't like or don't suit your taste. But I've found taste evolves over time if you let it. Though it will never evolve to like Durian fruit or Nasi Lemak!

    I was really fussy with food as a kid... probably because the cooking I endured after my Gran died was absolutely wicked! It took a long time to be braver with food, and drink for that matter, but I'm so glad I did.

    I absolutely love Italian food. But the regions are so unbelievably different over short distances. You can be the distance of Leeds to Sheffield and suddenly find what you'd be eating in one place was usurped by a more local tradition in the other. Be that a wine, a carbohydrate, a cheese, a ham.

    In the UK, even in London, Italians that stick to their roots and showcase the foods they grew up on is pretty rare and I find that a shame.

    I've always found something really quite nice in the sharing and experiencing of different cultures.

    I’ve got friends, second generation Scottish/Indian.
    Often invited to beer and curry nights. All home made, never too hot/spicy but really tasty.
    Not happened lately due to covid restrictions but I fully hope and expect normal service to be resumed shortly. Missed these nights badly.

    Trying to think what was nearby, good, and outdoors from my Tower Bridge Road days or what's towards Vauxhall. You have got the advantage of likely being somewhere at 12pm, so with good weather you'll be early enough enjoy some space in most beer focused places.

    Sadly, outside of Mother Kelly's there isn't much that will kick your craft beer habit that way. Starting to step in to Young's territory, which is perfectly fine in terms of surroundings, but not so much in terms of beer choice and how much you have to pay!

    Is the outside area at Brick Brewery or the Brew By Numbers in Peckham not open enough? Might be worth considering one morning.

    Many of the ex Ghurka lads i work with who were born in the villages which border India laugh when we say we're having a Indian on night shift, don't know if you've tried it but if not give Nepalese cuisine a go, outstanding.

    BBNO was our regular haunt and pretty much supported it in its first 6 months! We were often the only ones in midweek but got to know the people serving and benefitted over time!!! Sadly, they went mid way through 2019 and it went downhill in terms of ranges, collaborations and just a cold level of service. Anyway, they did say (before they left) that they'd had problems with the houses that run alongside the carpark where they'd put a few tables so the council had refused permissions to drink outside. So I'd very much expect service to be inside. It was the actually the last place we had a drink a few days before lockdown. It was rammed.

    As for Brick (i don't know if you've been to the tap room), its quite close to the high street and you've a few eateries around, plus you've a burger pop up in the front of their yard, so that gets very busy. And inside feels much smaller than BBNO.

    Bullfinch and Canopy are walkable in Herne Hill, but neither are very open and have something of a bottle neck. As is Florence, but their beer choices are a bit naff (though in all fairness, I'm judging things on what I last experienced, and they are all 18 months or longer, so they could have changed considerably, if they are even still there). The Beer Shop in Nunhead is a big favourite, but its tiny and the outdoor yard is all enclosed with a canopy now, so thats going to rule that out sadly.

    Don't start me on Youngs! Though I am a bit partial to a pint or two of winter warmer over the festive period! The nearest pub to us was taken over by them when they bought out Redcomb. They'd only had it about 2 years and prior to that it was really really grim. It took a while to find their feet, but they'd got a decent mix of south london brewers, stuff for the old regulars and over time, they started turning out some very decent good quality food.

    Then Youngs came!

    The walk we might do goes through the park behind mother kellys, so it would be easy to check if it was ok or not. There is a moored barge too that has views back on westminster and was deserted when we went (probably 3-4 years ago), though the beer was so so.

    Having said that.... we still have about 5 cupboards of beer to get through that the missus has gone bonkers buying in!

    I've had it a couple of times and though I recall it as quite rich, what I tried didn't have a lot of flavour. I think one was in Exeter and the other was maybe Norwich? The mains were a bit drab, but I do recall enjoying one of the starters.

    I do love Vietnamese and Thai. Though again, authenticity can be a problem.
