Can't see it lasting much longer than the free-rent period. They've just opened their flagship store in Meadowhall - footfall there will be much much more.
They’ve signed a 10 year lease. The one in Meadowhall replaces half of the old House of Fraser so they’ve saved money on a separate unit. The one in Doncaster does quite well.
I bought a Granada moose coat, the man in the lock up says they're better and he seemed honest enough. Not tried it in the arctic though yet.
In hindsight, I probably should’ve created a new post rather than adding a comment in an existing one as Flannels was announced ages ago. Most of the comments since resurrecting this post are on the back of that, and not the more important update. I’ve updated my original post with the most up-to-date info relating to the delayed opening of Cineworld, Nando’s, and Superbowl to make it a bit easier to find.
What about Frank Bird don't people still go there and there's a new menswear store opened quite recently in barnsley cant remember name.
I hope they do well, but I don't pay top dollar for clothes. Used to do in my 20's / 30's, but I've let myself go. I spend a fair bit on hats from time to time. Brands don't really interest me, but each to their own.
What's the reason for the delay to the others? If there rest of the shops don't open till next year I can see a lot of vandalism happening in a deserted shopping centre as next won't pull in enough customers alone to make it have more than a few dozen people a day passing through. TK maxx and sports direct are both largely accessible from the entrances on either end if I remember correctly so even their customers have no reason to walk down the deserted areas. I'm also really worried that Jay is right and Cineworld will simply never open. The fact that they signed a lease 4 years ago (I think) and the place has been largely built for ages yet they say they are still only planning how to fit it out suggests to me that their commitment is extremely low.
There’ll be lots in the legals to stop that happening. They won’t just be able to ‘pull out’ at such a late stage without being heavily fined. The only way they could back out at such a late stage would be if the company went into admin. It’s not unusual that they signed their tenancy agreement so long ago for a new-build development. The opening was always slated for 2021 and that was pre-Covid. The reason for the delay is Covid as per the release I linked to (which is now available on both the council and Glass Works websites and will likely be the front page of The Chronicle tomorrow). Remember, Cineworld is a major tenant fit out (13 screens, plus seating), foyer area and Starbucks. The council only hand over the building shell. There could be delays to the procurement and delivery of screens and sound systems for example. As I said, it’s not surprising, just a little disappointing.
All feels a bit underwhelming to me. Jd, tkmax, sports direct, fish market. Seen very little from the development so far, to draw me in. Hope there’s more to come.
I've not been to Barnsley for a while, but wasn't there already a TK Maxx (in Alhambra) and Sports Direct (old BHS building)? What is going in these units?
