Next are in the Alhambra too; it'll become full of charity shops. As for the Littlewoods building, only a massive fire would improve that.

The Alhambra is privately owned so the council do not benefit from the rent these businesses pay for their stores. It’s more beneficial for the council to get them to relocate in order to make more money. The retailer usually gets a bigger and better store out of it. I’ve heard rumours that Primark may extend into the TK Maxx unit when that closes. I doubt we’ll see any national chains taking space in The Alhambra.

The new design and sustainability strategy for Barnsley Town Centre (available on the Council website) suggests the former BHS unit (where Sports Direct is currently) is likely to be demolished, alongside some other buildings on Albert Street, in order to create more green space in the town centre. Peel Parade is also earmarked for demolition as the desire is to reduce retail space by a third and diversify the offering.

An interesting read. Are there any timescales for when they hope to start and finish some of those large scale projects?

£5.10 for a pint of Moretti in Market Kitchen, who would pay that in Barnsley.... its packed to the rafters.

Folk in tarns perception of Barnsley folk is so out of touch.

    What is peel parade?
Demolishing the bhs building and opening up that little area up Albert Street would be the best thing to happen to Barnsley for years, I really hope they do that

When they say Peel Parade I’m assuming they’re referring to the units down one side of Peel Street - the old Argos etc. This is a long term strategy so unlikely to start seeing any of this work for a number of years.
