Yes. Back in the day you couldn’t move for pack horses towing coil waggons and the like. And as for the horse muck….
Good point. That would make a great subject for the Barnsley Museum. Take a dozen or so people and show where their roots are. A sort of tarn ‘Who do you think you are?’
My great grandparents settled in Barnsley from Ireland. That was early 1900's. Bloody foreigners, coming over here...
My maternal Grandfather was Irish, my maternal Grandmother was Scottish. My wife's are Welsh. Our children & grandchildren definitely have a considerable percentage of Celtic blood running through their veins.
The word immigrant is highly charged and has been weaponised by our right wing media. Worth noting though that when ever Brits migrate to another country, they suddenly become "ex-pats"
Take a look at the videos of Kabul Airport of people clinging onto the side of a USAAF plane taxiing including one who was still attached as it took off and fell to his death. Economic migrants my arse.
Can see why people leave this forum. A genuine belief that the town has poor infrastructure & isn’t prepared for a population increase & you get insinuations of racism. Work a lot in Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster, Worksop, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Nottingham & out to the east coast & find Barnsley to be shocking to get round. Can take 40 minutes to get one side of an average sized town to the other & there’s no way you can possibly make most of the main roads into two lanes due to houses either side. It isn’t a competition. I’m not saying Barnsley’s the most over populated place around. I know getting up the west side of Leeds is shocking I think everyone knows London’s bad. Let’s not be ridiculous & state the obvious. I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks it. There’s been no end of complaints about the new houses at Hoyland Common & the proposed site between Barugh Green, Higham & Darton. We’ve had the park knocked down at Poggy to hopefully sort the traffic mess out there. We’ve had schools knocked down & merged into super schools & now there’s talks to build another because we’ve not got enough schools. I couldn’t give a damn where my neighbours are from as long as they’re sound. I’d happily swap some of the puddings I went to school with for asylum seekers. Do a swap deal for the clowns who were throwing bottles at the Coventry bus on Saturday as well. But do I want Barnsley’s population to increase? Not particularly no, do I want our green belt land going, not really no.
It’s definitely better than some. I used to have to go to Leeds & Bradford regularly & hated it due to the traffic.
Personally I didn't see anything even remotely racist in your post. You made a valid point about population and roads in Barnsley but nothing racist. I completely disagree with your traffic thing but it was a valid point
Getting into Barnsley can be a pain off the M1. And you've got the twin problems of poor road layouts and minimal use of public transport. Sheffield has to be one of the worst places in the UK for its relative size and how ridiculous the traffic gridlock gets on just about every round about. I'd still rather selectively neuter parts of the male population than not take in those in need of refuge, especially those who we've sent out to fight for the UK and US and put them in harms way.
These centrists sure go from 0 to eugenics fast. Let me guess, you know exactly which parts of the male population you’d like to ‘selectively neuter’.

There’s not a town in the country that’s not experiencing population growth, I don’t accept that Barnsley is ‘suffering’ worse than elsewhere. As for traffic, I live about two and a half miles from Donny town centre, and it can take in excess of 40 mins to get in at the wrong time of day (about walking pace). I can get into Barnsley quicker My 1hr door to door to Sheffield becomes an hour and a half if I set off 20 mins later, or if there’s any issue on the roads. Leeds city centre is quicker to walk across than drive at all bar the quietest of times. BTW I don’t believe you’re remotely racist, but I do believe you’ve got a very narrow world view re infrastructure. Like I said, I wouldn’t put Barnsley in the top 20 worst traffic towns just in the North.
Generally, the traffic gets noticeably worse as soon as you cross the border into West Yorkshire. Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford and Wakefield are all worse for traffic than Barnsley
