Football style

The way we're winning seems to be causing more conflict than when we lose regularly.
If we go on a losing streak maybe things will settle down.
I think not though!

 

It would be nice if we could win more like Norwich and Watford but a wins a win. Have people stopped to think that winning regularly breeds confidence and after a season or two of not being whipping boys we might just come out of our shells a bit more. It's a gradual process and we aren't established yet in spite of our league position.

 

They should call it ‘possession football with the intention to score.’ The garbage we’re talking about should be called ‘possession football with the intention of keeping the ball for no apparent reason, even if it means 200 passes in own half and going now

I think there is an alternative plan. I think I’ve only missed 2 games this season and I noticed that sometimes, for certain periods of play (and usually away from home) it’s like watching a different team. My memory isn’t what it was, but I don’t remember much hoof ball away at Bournemouth for example. I think VI’s tactics change throughout the match, sometimes radically, and sometimes subtly. But mainly away, which is way I would welcome an away game minority report .

 

Now we have changed our style I wonder how people feel now

 

After last night bring back val

 

I'm thinking...why didn't the board recruit another Head Coach in the same ilk as Val baring in mind how we did last season?

 

Many on here moaned they didn't like it but last night was like watching paint dry especially 1st half

 

I didn't see anyone moan. I saw people say they didn't like the style but welcomed the points. And it certainly wasn't a large number, until Ismael departed.

What I do find staggering is a complete lack of patience and understanding now.

It's understandable it will take players time to adapt. Either new signings, players coming to our shores, young kids taking early career steps and those having to shift and try new positions given the number of injuries and delays in some being fully fit or up to speed.

But to see the vitriol after 3 games where we have 4 points on the board already is absolutely incredible.

 

Plus the fact only 3 subs this season .

 

You were one of the most critical of vals style, did you watch the 1st half it was one of the worst at home since struber v pne. We were poor v cov and got lucky last night we got what we deserved.

Luton played just like us last season long balls, clearing there lines asap, playing the football in our half, pressing us. We were slow to get the ball forward, overplaying at the back, toothless in attack, the luton poster said we had 70% possession well that a great stat but most of our possession was in our own half.

Its sad to see the negatives but the warning signs are there for a long season if we keep to this style.

 

I simply said i didn't like the style. I stand by that. It's the least enjoyable form of "football" I've ever seen. I stand by that. It was successful from a points perspective, it was abject failure when judged through entertainment. Some don't care how a win comes. I'm delighted I'm not one of them.

Some people like lamb, others don't.

I'll be watching the game back when I get time, might be late on Thursday or maybe Friday. I've seen plenty of encouraging signs so far from the first two league games. Much to be optimistic about but also plenty to work on, and if anyone wants to give a final assessment on a team at this stage really need to have a word with themselves.

 

The subs wouldn't have made a difference last night, val benefitted from 5 subs as he asked the players to play a high press and with alot of energy. Last night there was nothing like that last night.

 

You have to let me know what you thought to the 1st half it was less enjoyable than any ismal game I saw.

Surely you understand it's going to take time to bed in his style, tactics and preferred approach? There were quite a lot of long balls against Coventry. I can understand playing shorter last night purely because of the personnel available to him.

 

I got flashbacks last night, insisting on playing out from the back and creating problems for ourselves, hate watching that. Also we are back to the same problem at the front pre Dike and Morris. Who do we stick up the front with Woodrow.....will it be Frieser, Victor or now Odour.....what a choice...we tried it for ages.....no good. These were the days when we often played well and ended up with nothing similar to last night. We played some great stuff last night, just in patches..... but with no end product.....again. We desperately need Morris or the Belgians or someone! On a good note the defence is looking proper good and Benson looks the part.

 

I can but its just very worrying the 1st 4 games including Bolton in the cup I've found worrying I'm not sure where the goals are coming from for all the possession we had last night mostly in our own half we created very little, the tactic of everyone back to defend a corner when a goal down is negative. Hope I'm proved wrong and for me I'm not a fan of over playing with the ball and pointless possession.

 

I saw that we had all men back for a corner against Coventry and can't say I'm enamoured about that.

Worth noting we failed to score 13 times in 44 games under Ismael and only scored 3 on 4 occasions. Only averaging 1.27 goals a game. So it's not like last season we were prolific and created loads of clear cut chances.

 

We did create plenty last season it was converting them that was the problem and cost us v Swansea in the end. But anyway this is a diffrent style of play so we will see how it pans out very much like struber style for me though

 

We could have continued the press like Val but tried to add a little more composure when dealing with basic clearances and the head tennis in midfield. Refine rather than throw away would have been better. Instead of pinging the ball out of defence as soon as it comes in try and bring it down and find a man and same in midfield and edge of the box. We used to cause carnage with the constant bombardment in the air and pouncing on mistakes - that got a bit tiresome even tho it was effective. Its the - we must make 6 passes before we go forwards that's so boring and predictable along with the same patterns of play every time. Teams know what we are going to do so just manipulate us easily.

Lack of movement was also noticeable last night.

 

I don't think we created much at all. Much of our goals were set pieces, speculative hits or hopeful punts. There were a few which were created well. Thinking of Mowatt from Morris (think it was Blackburn) and Brittain for Dike against Boro and Wycombe.

But we didn't create lots of really good chances or carve teams open. Speculative and hopeful, and that was my issue with it.

But think... we're 4 points better off than last season already. Got to be pleased with that given the huge amount of change at the Well.
