Copied from the English Football in the 1970's FB Group. Three League games into Allan Clarke's period as manager and of course a promotion season. Anyone on here at this game?
I was there. We played em off the park. I was standing on the away end and remember their fans saying how good we were.
Yup. We played some quality football that day. Probably the best I'd ever seen from a Barnsley team up to that point. The scoreline flattered City to the extreme.
The big old open concrete Kop at VP was split down the middle for home / away fans. It was a regular battle zone and there were a lot of bad concrete related injuries. I saw my first four Barnsley games later in the season after hearing my new Barnsley relative waxxing lyrical (banging on!!) about something special happening. The first game at Easter I thought Barnsley looked World Beaters - likewise the second; the third I thought Huddersfield looked World Beaters (night match) and by the time the third came round - big game vs Grimsby - I was hooked. 20 years to the day after my first game, my first child was born, so April 16th is a lucky day!!
Yes, I was there. My Dad took to me first ever away game. We were absolutely brilliant and got me hooked for life. Bradford were lucky to get 1. We should have had about 6
Seem to remember their kop end had half home fans half Barnsley fans with a double line of coppers separating , sort of !!!!
The atmosphere inside the ground for that Grimsby match was something else. Just looked it up, 21261 for a night match in the 4th division. Splendid.
I saw that. Won 2, Lost 1, same points as WBA who have won 3. No wonder they were so successful in the 70s and 80s...
My memories of the Huddersfield game are that we footballed them off the park on a pitch that hardly had a blade of grass on it. The only times they broke into our half, they scored and, unbelievably, missed two penalties. Coming out of the match afterwards, we were struggling to figure out how we hadn't repeated our six goal haul on Boxing Day against Port Vale.
Yes, I remember we completely dominated that Huddersfield game but bizarrely I can’t recall their 2 missed penalties! I also remember the home end at Leeds Road (the Cowshed) being completely taken over by Barnsley fans.
I was there. Cracking long range effort from Graham Pugh for one of the goals. Brick through the coach window as we were sat waiting to leave after the game . Happy Days!!
I was only 13 but I just remember that every one of their players was bigger, faster, stronger than us (a bit like modern times ). That's how my memory plays it out, anyway. Maybe calling them world beaters was a bit strong though ;-)
