On this Day in 1978

Just goes to show, there aren't too many clubs who are currently too far from their 'natural' position of competing.

Division One has all today's big boys in there.

Division Three has a familiar look to it, especially with Sheffield Wednesday in there with Rotherham...

People's memories are blurring other games..
3 coach loads of fans that day that was it Which is what.. 150 fans. That kop end was all Bradford. At the start of the game about 15-20 Barnsley fans were in the bottom left corner trying to get out of the way of the Bradford gang, who were after em..
And when attacked, they ran on the corner of the pitch to get out the way...
I was further up the kop watching it all develop. Pugh and Peachey scored in the first 15 mins nobody cheered or even claped.. Bradford City was not a great place to go in the seventies

 

Rubbish. There were a damned site more than three coaches that day. We were stood down the side of the ground, not behind the goals, opposite corner to where the players came out. We went ballistic when we scored, as victories over Bradford City in the '70's was such a rare occurrence. Our away followings jumped up hugely in that first season under Allan Clarke.
Had you said all that about our 0-0 draw there in the Spring of 1977, when we were both going for promotion, then I'd have said you were correct.

 

I wasn’t at that game but I vividly remember the Bradford derbies in that era being pretty scary….for a young kid at the time like me anyway. There always seemed to be trouble brewing at the games culminating with that police horse losing an eye after being hit by a brick near the bus station after one game at Oakwell. Not sure on the year but possible around 76 or 77?

Think that might’ve been the day of Mick Butler’s comeback following one of his broken legs? I believe he scored both goals but my memory could be playing tricks….!?

 

Yes it’s good to see Bournemouth, Wigan and Reading at their traditional level.
Although Reading were a decent side that season though but couldn’t sustain it and went back down.

 

No. That was in the 1974/75 season, when Mick came on as a second half substitute. We were losing 1-0 at the time, Mick came on, scored two goals at the Kop end to put us 2-1 up, before they scored a late equaliser. Mick broke his leg again later in the campaign at Workington.
In the later 2-2 from 1976/77, we came back from 2-0 down to draw the match. Mick had already left for Huddersfield in the March of that year.

 

I knew a 2-2 draw with Bradford was relevant to one of Mick Butler’s returns from a broken leg.
How on earth do you remember all this stuff??!!

 

Not rubbish, I was there, it's true. 3 buses, all parked on that street behind the very small side stand facing the one that burnt down. Never saw or heard another Barnsley fan until we got back on the bus..

 

Of course it's rubbish. For example, there was also a special train from Barnsley that day that in itself would've held a damned site more than 150. Our particular coach was one of quite a few parked on the street behind the covered terracing.

No there wasn't .. there was no train. Your making stuff up now. Speicals went Bradford before that season and after.. the first speical of that season was to Scunthorpe a few weeks later..

Yes, me & my Dad were at the game, remember being in that part of the ground. Think Cec Podd was still playing for Bradford then from memory.
