He was, JP. Their striker, Joe Cooke always seemed to play well against us. He scored the only goal in the return fixture at Oakwell later that season.
Cec Podd and Joe Cooke we’re the first black players I can recall from starting to watch the Reds in 73-74. Very few in the game in those days.
That's true. They both seemed to play well against us all the time and I always wanted us to sign them when we were in the Fourth Division.
He did, old mate. Graham Pugh goals were a bit of a rarity at the best of times. But that one was especially memorable.
I recall being at Bradford when Bruce Bannister scored with an overhead kick in injury time.Late 'sixties I think.
Wasn't it at Valley Parade where you were arrested by the police for wanting to 'debate' with Bobby Ham over his cheating?
Thank you, old mate. But it's not much of an issue, just two fans having different memories of a game 43 years ago.
The crowd that day was 8,341 which would have been very large for City at the time if few away fans. They'd typically get 2 - 5000 for a home game in the lower leagues at that time.
It certainly was! I think it was because Ham got Paddy Greenwood sent off. I was "escorted" into the home dressing room after the match, where Mr Ham was asked if he wanted to press charges. He said no, just send him back to school. That suited me as I was still at school anyway.
And the same season City pulled 4,136 v Port Vale and 4,471 v Newport. So 8k plus would back up the fact there were a few from Barnsley perhaps.
It's funny looking back, but of course I'm not proud of it. I was one of loads of Barnsley fans on the pitch and just happened to be near Ham as the players were leaving the pitch. I never did anything like that again!
I was at that game when Greenwood got sent off but not sure what season that was. I’d guess around 1975/76? Think we got beat 3-0 and I’d gone with a mate at the time and his dad. His dad was furious about Ham’s cheating and got into a serious argument about it with a Bradford fan outside the ground after the match. He had a bit of a temper and almost got brawling until his mate pulled him away lol.
A 2-0 win. Derek Bell penalty and a John Dungworth own goal, who actually played on loan at Barnsley during the 1974/75 season. He scored one goal, in a 3-0 away win at Reading.
I saw you eat fish & chips in an aggressive manner at Blackpool before the cup match a few seasons back. . I retreated into the fog.
