I mean he shouldn't be declaring in this scenario anyway. Bat and bat and bat to degrade the pitch as much as possible to help get the 10 wickets. Headingley in recent times often gets quite flat on days 3 & 4 especially for seamers. Last time we played here it was relatively flat on day 5!
Why not? We've already more than enough runs and in a packed schedule they would get extra rest which would especially help our bowlers as we've already enough players dropping like flies.
They need the runs to get their confidence with the bat up. Doubt there'll be a need to declare and Joe will be last man standing as usual!
Bet they've been involved in a few. I haven't got the patience or ability to find 3 day victories. But there's been a number of 2 day wins.https://stats.espncricinfo.com/
It's a good job the top order dug in. Yes they have license but they were all daft dismissals. Just because we had over 300 on the board it doesn't mean just swing a bat at it. That's why we'll never dominate teams. If that had been Australia they'd have not lost another wicket until the close of play. Instead we're 8 down. Yes it was fun to watch and we'll probably win the test as a result but the bad habits crept back in. We solve one problem and create another. Bairstow, Butler and Ali haven't scored many runs and missed a massive opportunity. If I were them I'd be gutted getting out to tired bowlers.
I think all three of them will be asked/allowed/told to concentrate on white ball cricket this winter.
Good. With a 345 lead the game should be dead and buried but I'd have liked to see at least one of them get a score as the pitch at Headingley helps teams who can bat in days 3 and 4. Look at the West Indies last time they toured.
Poor...we could have really hammered home our advantage if the middle order had applied themselves properly after tea yesterday and set a tone for the rest of the series. They did something similar in the first test in India when they collapsed. We should win but it should have been an annihilation.
It still.should be an annihilation, we could have 2 days left over and a couple of hundred odd runs to play with!
I like perfection. I'd rather have had us declare at 550/6 than be bowled out. We lost our last 8 wickets for 134 runs.
It was very gloomy conditions which is a nightmare to play in at Headingley to be fair, but I do agree they'll be disappointed. They were all soft dismissals apart from Curran who went hard and was a little unlucky. I think I'd have Pope in for Buttler but give the other 2 more time. Jonny looks in good touch and it feels like there's a big innings coming. Moeen is only just back in the side do deserves a few more innings to sink or swim. If Buttler doesn't sort his form out soon he won't be playing in any form of the game for England. He looks in awful touch.
