Why is it that the most vocal brexiteers are also most against Scottish independence

    The Scottish people never had a say in the formation of the Union in the 18th century. It took till 2014 for them to be consulted. Just saying....

    But it's extremely hypocritical isn't it to say "I demand a right to choose to leave that union but you should have no right to choose to leave this union"?

    Not sure that's true, I remember talking to ardent brexiteers in 2018 at work (BCA car auctions) and when I suggested that Scotland and Northen Ireland might leave the Union as a result of Brexit, almost to a man (or woman) they said they couldn't care less. You're probably right about such people as Johnson or Farage etc, but amongst the voters I don't think they are at all bothered.

    Some are. In fact the strongest brexit idiots that I personally know all absolutely hate Nicola sturgeon and complain about their independence at every opportunity. Poison dwarf, krankie, 'that bitch' and evil woman are names I hear to describe her quite regularly. The reason I made the post in the first place was I'd just got off the phone with one frothing at the mouth because of it

    I don’t remember us having a vote when a Scotsman became king in 1603, or a Dutchman in 1688, or a German in 1713. For that matter, I’m not entirely convinced that the French were very welcome in 1066.

    Not everyone is of that mind. The primary reason I voted leave was to hasten the break up of the UK. Looks like that’s coming to fruition. Good news for all concerned- particularly the North of England.

    But it's extremely hypocritical isn't it to say "I am against having to remain in that union against my wishes but am also against you being allowed to leave this union which you are forced to remain in against your wishes"?

    True, I heard similar remarks from some workmates who also said they couldn't care less about Scottish independence, I didn't waste any effort in pointing out their paradoxical position.

    I honestly don't believe these people actually think about such issues, they just parrot the bilge they've read in the Mail or Express...

    What part of that would be good for the North of England? Genuine question. Much of the North was funded by EU money previously. That's now gone. If Scotland and Wales both left, Tory rule in perpetuity would be pretty likely. How is that in any way good for the North?

    Agree entirely, every time I hear someone mention ‘Jimmy Cranky’ I know there’s no political opinion I’d share with whoever said it.

    However someone suggested to me the other day that maybe him and me would possibly see eye to eye on some things despite them believing there’s a case for capital punishment.

    Well the Scots voted to stay in the European Union but want to be free of the Union with the rest of the UK. Is that not just the same argument?

    This is common to all independence movements: the question of ensuring stability and wholeness post-independence, otherwise where does it end? I can’t imagine that Scottish separatists would want to sanction the further cleaving of regions from Scotland post-independence.

    Not forgetting that Scots voted to stay in this Union in 2014....55-45% on the highest turnout since universal suffrage began.
