    In Lincolnshire where I spent a lot of my childhood it was "feast". The word "fair" was used to describe the dodgems, waltzers etc, but the actual event was definitely the feast.

    Maybe its a Wombwell thing - I'm from Wombwell and it was always the Feast (pronounced feyst) - The feast field was opposite Kings Road School where the Police station is. I dont remember just getting Sloppy peas there but it may well have been an option

    As I remember, Barnsley Feast Week was late August.

    On the first Saturday morning there'd be lines of coaches, probably over 100, going past our house on Wilthorpe Road, in the direction of Huddersfield.

    Presumably bound for Blackpool.

    In the fifties and sixties, Thursday night of the Feast was "Old Folks Night". Tickets were sold for the benefit of the Old FolksTreat Fund (usually a day trip to the seaside). Tickets were accepted by the freasties and people were allowed on the rides for half price. It was a way for the Feast owners to support the local community. I wonder when that all stopped? My guess is the early seventies.
