There were quite a few tired legs out there particularly against the fresher Poles, whose to say the ball would have even got that far if we could have closed them down faster. I’m not saying Southgate shouldn’t be manager, I ‘m saying he should learn from his mistakes .
I agree to be honest, that it was strange not to see any subs. But we looked proper comfy to me, and in the end I doff my cap to Poland for not giving in and getting a good goal.
The opposition weren't knackered tonight. Anyway if we persist with Rice and Phillips in central midfield we will be hard to beat, but we won't beat the best.
Record in qualifying for Euro 2020 was W7 L1 We’re top of our current qualifying group with a record of W6 D1. A better record than Spain, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Germany and France. Interestingly the only team with a 100% record are Denmark who we beat at Euro 2020. We qualified for the knockout tournament of the very first Nations League with an agonising defeat to Holland where a razor close VAR decision and a John Stones **** up cost us. And we just went undefeated at the last major tournament, breaking records for goals conceded (I think), and losing in the final with the very last kick of the game against a team undefeated in 36 games. The longest undefeated streak ever in International Football. That doesn’t even include our first World Cup semi-final since 1990 where we lost in extra time. Exactly where are these ‘a lot’ of games that we Chuck away?
Did you not watch the Italy game then? Maybe Chuck away is a bit strong but we don’t seem to make our dominance pay against better teams and I think he could do better
I was at the Italy game. But that doesn’t answer where the ‘a lot’ of games are that you mentioned? I also think Italy are an incredibly talented team and people talk like we had it in the bag. They’re forced us on the back foot and we’ll never know if a switch in tactics from us to be more aggressive would have improved us, or led to us being picked off at will.
thats why it’s a football forum though, it’s opinions he needs to vary it a bit imho , other teams must know what’s coming , I think he should have changed it, you obviously don’t
Get to bed flower.......you seem to have caught too much sunshine today, don’t be late for school In the morning
I haven’t actually commented on tonight’s game. Fresh legs would have made sense to me and most others, but we were also absolutely coasting. This isn’t about opinions though. You claimed we chuck a lot of games away. Our record suggests we don’t.
International managerial stats by Gareth Southgate for England and England under21s 101 games 68 wins 18 draws 15 defeats Inept eh?
What's he won? No better than anyone else since Ramsey. You don't get owt for losing in Semi's or Finals. He's done great with these players. However, Sven was penalties away from a couple of Semi Finals. Where do you draw the line? He's doing o.k but the barometer of success should be on tournament wins. I digress. I thought England played well last night and deserved to win. I don't think Southgate could have done anything differently.
He's done really well for England - his competition record smokes anything since the 60s. However, as a club manager his record is poor. Maybe the international game suits him - tournament football is as much about character and togetherness as it is tactics and planning. Day to day club management is a different matter though.
Always makes me laugh when people bring up Boro in their arguments against Southgate managing England. Asif that actually matters. International football is coming up against teams who don’t want to lose and putting 11 men behind the ball. So, Southgate beating these teams 1-0 is just as good as blowing teams away 4 and 5 nil. Let’s bring back Roy Hodgson and get knocked out by Iceland. Now THAT was an inept.
The golden generation had an excellent set of players but they never fit into a team because you’d got a manager wanting to play a midfield 4 & a front 2 to get the best out of Beckham & Owen but then you’d got Lampard who could only play in a 3 & Gerrard & Scholes who were both used to been the attack minded central midfielder (at that time) & the back ups were nowhere near as good. With this lot you’ve got top quality players all over the place & strength in depth in every position except centre back & keeper & most of the attacking players are comfortable playing either side or as a forward. Agree about replacing Southgate though. I wouldn’t bother, there’s always decisions we think would work better but in reality we don’t know. Like you I’d say his record is pretty good up to now.
