Just to get branded a racist because I've nowt against Chubby brown and think the Kumar parody sketch was racist in it's own way. if what I post doesn't sit right with your ideology? Ebony and Ivory is an excellent song btw.
I would also argue that many of those 1000s of people have been conditioned to be casually or overtly bigoted. Who's humour of choice is to laugh at people who trot out the same tropes under the banner of freedom of speech. Having freedom of speech doesn't mean it's instantly ok to say whatever the fk you want without fear of repercussion. Chubby Brown has been getting away with this $hite for decades. In my opinion it's way overdue that he's being called out for it.
If venues don’t like the product he is selling then he needs to change it to something they do. There’s no rule saying he has to be racist, if he’s any good he can write new material.
Why would he have the right to earn a living doing something the market can't sustain - because the world has moved on? His time has passed - loads of 'comedians' suddenly found they had no more work in the 80's and 90's, what if I wanted to make it as a sand dancer? I'm free to have a go, but if there's no audience should I cry that I'm being cancelled?
I think what he's saying is why do you not think that the goodness gracious me team parodying what they see as the typical archetypal Englishman going for an Indian is not racist as it can be a 2 way street' brilliant sketch btw...
The Goodness Gracious Me sketch isn't racist- it is making light of all the **** people in Indian restaurants have to put up with from our white society. They have nothing whatsoever against white people in general. The same can't be said for Roy Chubby Brown and people from diverse backgrounds to him.
Various reasons: Is it racist? It's not making a sweeping generalisation about a race, just an illustration that some people in Britain do act like that. Also I don't think it identifies the target of the joke as specifically white people - they could be black or any other race of English. Additional there's no hate behind it - I don't think it's in any way saying that what the English do is bad or inherently inferior - it's gently poking fun at an element of ignorance when it comes to Indian cuisine. Compare that with "joking" about smashing someone round the head with a shovel for being Muslim.
Lee Hurst is another who went from stand-up and TV "star" to careerless grifter because he went down the steaming thunder"lovely person" route. If Chubby Brown is genuinely funny, then all he has to do is update the jokes so they aren't offensive. And if he can't do that he deserves to be unemployed.
The GGM sketch clearly isn’t racist. They are just flipping something on it’s head to show how ridiculous it is. And they do it wonderfully. You can’t compare that to the bile that spews out of Chubby Browns mouth. I don’t he should be ‘cancelled’ as such, but then he isn’t so I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.
I'm glad that most people can see the blatant difference between the two. It's interesting how stuff like this gets brought up in these discussions isn't it...
Don't think I've seen one post from someone thats seen him recently. Surely he couldn't get away with the same act from the 70s and 80s, it's illegal isn't it ???
Most songs in the charts contain sexual explicit lyrics & the use of the n word nowadays, where's the complaints there?
Because there is a difference between sexually explicit content and sexist content. And using the n word in a song isn't necessarily racist.
Here’s some anti-Islamic stand up, to try and redress the balance. Chubby even gets a name check at 7 mins
I can't believe some posters on here have described his shows as "hilarious". I saw him in the early 80s and found his show totally disgusting and offensive I couldn't wait for him to get off stage. Which says a lot to me about how low some individuals morals and standards are set. Since then I have not seen him or bought a dvd. Which I think is better than banning his show. I believe any publicity, even bad publicity for bigots and racists just encourages more of the same mentality and actually encourages more followers. Instead of simply marginalising his "comedy" by ignoring him.
