50 games most from the bench if they both played upfront for 50 games I know who I'd put money on to score the most and I know who I'd rather have as a lwb. (And I'm not saying victor is the answer either but he is more of a forward than odour) he could have gave cole a chance.
We definitely pressed first half. People keep saying we didn't but you could freeze frame loads of times and see that front five setup aggressively going after it but being played through by a quality side who were on form. Not sure about the second half but the early goal killed the little confidence we had.
Talking about the press Our forwards never pressed v Luton at home. When they were launching the long balls from the back i was thinking why aren't the forwards busting a gut to put their players under pressure and make it hard to place the long balls where the want to.
I reckon it will be mid November to early December before we can judge what our best starting line up will be. Some will take time to settle in. Odour may not even make the bench. He’ll have to make more of an impression than he does at present. As for being a better defender than Ben ( or Jordan for that matter) Williams. I disagree. He loses concentration too much. And is weak in the tackle. I genuinely hope he succeeds. But I hope that for every player. Some sadly will fall away.
Without seeing the the Belgian lads play, our attacking options are p#%s poor. I can’t understand why anyone would think otherwise. Morris is the only player who offers a goal threat, or you think might create something.
10 starts last season and another 23 from the bench. As we know under Val, those sub appearances were rarely five minutes at the end. Result was two goals. Do I think Oduor could have as many goal contributions given the same game time to develop? Possibly. Totally different player to Vic, and neither appear to be the answer long term, but it's hardly the most mental of selections to start him in four games. If that's all the evidence we have for calling Schopp's team selections bizarre than I'm sure you'd agree we really are going overboard?
I don't think anyone does..........although saying piss poor is still a bit extreme. I think it's more that we've had to rely on the players that start delivering the goods and if that doesn't work then our options are zero. Means you can't adapt to how the opposition setup or change who's winning/losing those personal battles.
I presume because the cost/reward ratio is not too great in our favour if a team is playing it long. We waste energy putting them under pressure, whilst they are still able to hoof the ball in the general direction of their forwards. Instead it would be better focusing energy on pressing when they retain the ball further up the pitch. I think last season demonstrated that the press is way more effective against teams which try to play out from the back.
To be honest the 1st half there back line was knocking it long and putting it on the Luton forward head all there front line were built like basketball players and were getting the better of helik winning the headers holding the ball up flick ons etc. I was sat there thinking make it harder for the defender to pin point the pass. But like you say possibly we tried to play it out from the back they pressed our back line and knocked it long it was like watching us last season in Luton and they did a number on us.
And this is where the West Brom fans are falling out with 'the hoof'. From the forum posts it appears they're not changing their style against the teams that go long against them and nullify the press. No complaints in the games where the opposition have tried to play football.
Of all these players being played "out of position"... Odour - Played all his football as an attacking midfielder until a short spell at left back for Leeds u23s for a few months before we signed him. Neither Struber or Ismael rated him as a left back. His best position in a 3-4-3 is in the front three Halme - Probably made as many appearances at midfield, as he has in defence. Ismael only picked him for a couple of games in defence. Struber used him at the base of a midfield diamond. Moon - Ismael played him in midfield last season as well. Against QPR, our lack of options in midfield was exposed, especially given Palmer's record for completing games, and Kane still being a way off, as shown by the fact that he was an unused sub at Oxford. Not sure how many of Schopp's selections can be questioned, there haven't been many selections to make so far!
I feel sorry for Odour that he's been given his chance when the team is really struggling going forward. He might have been better coming off the bench when defenders are tiring and like you say start with Vic instead.
I’d say piss poor is a fair assessment in my opinion. I hear what you’re saying though. Irrespective of injuries, a player of Oduor’s calibre should be no where our starting 11. I quite like Dom, but enthusiasm & hard graft will only get you so far. As for Woodrow, I really do fail to see what he brings. Crap in the air, no pace, poor at holding the up. Sure, he takes the penalties which I’ll give him credit for. Spends most of his time on the floor complaining to the Ref for a foul…… Opinions eh !!!
Its very debatable that odours best position is a forward in a front 3. I think when the football been severe up has been so poor people will question players positions and question weather other players would be better suited.
But you and others keep questioning 'bizarre team selections' and players being played out of position. When asked to back that up the evidence is pretty weak. Choosing Oduor over Vic, and bringing on the only players who could play CM off the bench at QPR, aren't great examples of why you're (royal you) are caling someone clueless and out of their depth. Hopefully you see where I'm coming from on that one. It also wasn't about Oduor's best position but his natural position. His natural position has always been earmarked to be further up the pitch and not at LB.
It is of course subjective. But, my opinion is he's better further forward than LWB, where he just didn't have the positional sense. I don't see him as a box to box midfielder that can play centrally in the midfield 4 either. So, in a 3-4-3, I'd say the front 3 is the best place for him. Whether he's Championship standard in any position is another matter. But I'd be surprised to see him start much once Iseka settles in.
I do not understand threads like this, it starts out by pointing out that we are falling down the league tonight & then people jump in putting the boot into the manager & the team etc , bloody hell , we are not playing tonight & cannot effect the movement in the table tonight , time to debate the current league position is after tomorrow when the current round of matches is complete , I REPEAT WE ARE NOT PLAYING TONIGHT
Wasn't aware of that but makes sense. I am sure I can remember some similar games for us last season where the press just wasn't effective, yet we seemed to persist anyway. I think it's clear that schopp is perhaps a bit more open to changing the style of play based on the opposition than ismael was and even changing the style within games. Which often relies on players making judgement calls on when to play out from the back and when to press etc. Which may be another factor that is contributing to the inconsistent performances so far. Still think we are showing some promise though considering the available squad.
He could have moved styles from lwb that game to center midfield as he was blowing out of his arse towards the end. I don't think odour would get in any other team in the championship as a forward player thats just my opinion based on what I've seen.
