England now ranked the 3rd best team in the world. Joint highest position since 2012 and since rankings were introduced in 1992. Yet many still say Southgate is an inept manager.
Rankings mean nothing. I'd rather make history and have some silverware and let's face it we should have done.
Weren’t Switzerland ranked number 1 a few years ago? I wouldn’t put too much stock in these rankings personally.
So Italy are ranked below 2 teams who they beat on the way to actually winning summat? Sorry, I know I’m being facetious. But you get my point.
Got to laugh at people saying he's not good. Look at our squads between 1998 and 2012 and what we achieved (or rather didn't) under a series of managers. Since Southgate came in we've had our first World Cup semi since 1990 and our first Euros final ever.
Is that the same Italy who are supposed to have been the best team at the tournament? The team who we couldn't expect to keep out for 90 minutes? The team that beat us? Yet they're ranked 5th?
You could also say they prove that the manager of the team ranked third was incapable of beating the team ranked fifth.
According to Wikipedia, Switzerland's highest ranking is 3rd from 1993. The ranking system was ridiculously simple back then though; there was no weighting for the quality of opponent or the importance of the match, so you got the same amount of points for beating Liechtenstein in a friendly match than you would for beating Brazil in the World Cup final... But yeah, even today the FIFA ranking doesn't really mean that much, you're right about that.
Finished 4th at a World Cup in which Italy did not qualify and second in the Euros. Pretty consistent I'd say. Ranking sounds about right.
Do they take penalties into account as effectively the final was a draw. Not sure how it works for ranking points
It think it’s classed as a draw but they get extra ranking points for being the champions of the tournament. I could be wrong though. That was just an assumption
