I'm sure driving standards are getting worse. The amount of drivers I see on mobile phones or just generally not concentrating is staggering.

Our judicial system and the sentencing guidelines are so out of touch.
5 years, 5 bloody years, he'll be out on licence after 2 n half.
Obviously he never intended to kill those people, but he would have known that using a mobile whilst driving could cause the death of people.

    going o/t
    - surprising how many school children are studying their mobiles as they walk to and from school not looking where they are going.

Yes, walking on a pavement looking at your phone is just as bad as looking at your phone whilst driving a multi-ton lump of metal at high speed.

I was behind one the other day, head literally buried in his phone while driving, and his wife looking down too, clearly they were lost, in a built up area with kids/schools in close proximity. Maybe they've never come across a car phone holder for GPS. I had to beep loud and long much to their surprise. He looked in the rear view mirror, looked at the road again, and then his head gradually tilted downwards again. Another blast of the horn. Bleeding dangerous! If that was me, I'd just pull over. Then you have the young lasses frantically scrolling through snapchat at traffic lights

Remember another Barnsley bloke who dozed off at wheel of his Sainsbury`s wagon on A1 and killed 6 people, he got 6 years later reduced to five on appeal.

I think there's an argument to be had about the length of sentence, but what always astounds me in these cases is how short the driving ban is. How have we let society become so dominated by the motor car that somebody can use one to kill two other people but will be given free reign of the road again in just four short years? As a pedestrian I find it terrifying.

Ban them for life - that would be a deterrent. A useful side effect is that it might mean those of us who don't drive get some public transport investment as well!

Sadly more pedestrians are killed/injured whilst using their mobile phones whilst out and about than are killed by drivers using their mobile phones.

Well, considering its legal to walk around while looking at your phone, therefore many many more people will do that, it seems pretty obvious.

The amount of folk crossing roads whilst looking into their phones and not paying attention to traffick is shocking.

I’ve always said if you want to commit murder do it in a car, you’re never going to get the same sentence. Not that I condone it of course!!

very sad, but think people who are saying he should get longer sentence, do not realise that the guy as a life sentence of guilt to face ,any reasonable human being who as done this must be a mess and suffer nightmares and ruminate what happened every day

A reasonable person wouldn’t be on their phone whilst driving when they know full well what could happen.

Agree with some of the above. Very light sentence and driving ban should be a lifetime one for these kind of offences.

They should suffer nightmares but they won't be as bad as the poor deceased families will. Don't want to suffer nightmares etc DONT use your phone whilst driving - SIMPLE !!!
