Eddie hearn just said A J broke his eyesocket, he is a multi millionaire why get more brain damage, he should retire
He didn't say he has broken his eye socket. He said they were concerned he might have done. He also said AJ was telling them he hadn't and he was fine.
He's certainly not there yet but if he were to lose a rematch then it's hard to see where he goes. When you have as much money as he does and you are used to fighting for such huge purses it may well be difficult to find the motivation to fight for less.
Lost clearly. 117-111 for me. Joshua was absolutely knackered at the end. Any extra bulk he carries will just drain him quicker. It’s tough to beat Usyk, he’s the fittest in the division, the most skilful & has an iron chin. For Joshua to beat him he probably needs to take him out with one punch or at least stagger him badly. Even if Usyk gets slightly buzzed he’ll just get on his bike & dance around using his superior fitness for 30 seconds until he gets his legs back. If I was in Joshua’s camp I think I’d steer him away from a rematch. I don’t see what he can do differently. Try & get a Whyte rematch or something like that
AJ has given us some great nights for British boxing and at one point was the best in the world. Sadly the Ruiz fight was the end and trying to turn him into a "Boxer" isn't going to work.. retire mate and enjoy life..
yep i think he should in my opinion as a fringe boxing fan. Made his money, won his belts. His performances of late not great and starting to take more punishment. At 31 and with the division taking so long and so difficult to navigate. if Fury loses then maybe it opens up but i cant see that fight ever happening. What would you propose?
31 isn’t old? He started his pro career late, hasn’t really been in any wars, hasn’t taken much punishment, and with plenty of nights and fights ahead even if he was to lose the Usyk rematch. I don’t think AJ is a quitter. As shown by his honesty in the post fight presser and the respect that was on display. No excuses, no trash talk, no blaming anyone. He’s a competitor and a winner - you don’t run for retirement after a defeat when you’ve got so much left to give the sport.
100% avoid a rematch if I were AJ. Another defeat and he's done. Where he could build up his confidence by going after Whyte again and the loser of Wilder/Fury 3. Some fighters are a bad matchup and Usyk had bad match up written all over him. I think he'd fare OK against Wilder as he's no technician. For all his flabby gut Ruiz could box and had fast hands. Wilder lacks hand speed. He will go for the rematch, to remain relevant and immediately he's back on top but he needs to sleep on it and listen to people who know. His pride will hurt but its the smart thing to look elsewhere.
As I said above it will depend on his desire and how much he is driven to come back. If he were to lose the rematch he would suddenly not be able able command the fees he has been doing. He may at that point decide he has done enough. As you say he's still relatively untouched and fights less than once a year at the moment. Fair play to him on the dignity he took the defeat with, very classy.
I love AJ and have since watching him batter people at the Olympics. I just think he doesn't need the money so should protect his great legacy and not risk it more by having more defeats against him. People usually look better more title fights they have, but he's looking worse. In his last four fights he's lost to a fat Alex Mowatt and a bloated up cruiserweight. He isn't the fighter he was and even if he wins a rematch there will be less interest in him fighting Fury because of the extra loss on his record.
One of the greatest fighters of our time. A supreme elite boxer. Undisputed and untouchable at cruiser, now unified at heavy after 3 fights, after an absolute masterclass that no one gave him a chance with. Bloated up cruiserweight.
Usyk is a brilliant cruiserweight one of the very best ever. AJ as a proper heavyweight with far more experience and lots of advantages such as weight shouldn't be getting schooled so much that there was no way he could even win by a dodgy result.
As was Holyfield. Who went on to be one of the best heavyweights and fighters of all time. Fighters aren’t restricted to the weight class they start in.
Until some of these guys fight each other its haed to draw conclusions. And the sad fact is they may never fight each other. Instead we are just subject to endless rematch clauses
Watched it back again, AJ so flat footed at times. He hardly ever double jabbed and moved off the jab. His head movement wasn't there at all. He clearly hurt Uayk a few times but either this happened late in the round so couldn't take advantage or he simply couldn't take advantage. He should only take the rematch if he honestly feels he can knock him out. Otherwise take the loser between Wilder and Fury. I'm guessing it will be Wilder who would be thankful of a UK pay day. Usyk was pretty much faultless in everything he did.
