Nothing random about that rant mate. I walked to the ground yesterday thinking this could be the stake in the ground for how Schopp wants to take us forward this season. Maybe it was, it just wasn’t a stake that I liked!

I love our local media these days. Great journos, regularly getting us content, interviews, etc. Made easy by the access the club gives them. But I hope they grill Schopp, in a positive way, to explain the selection of Styles in central midfield yesterday. I thought the Starting XI had Gomes and Benson written all over it.

My only thought on this is that Gomes wasn’t fully fit or that Benson potentially drops way too deep to play alongside Gomes. If the latter, then signing both of them is just poor recruitment even if they are individually really good players and prospects.

He needs to stamp his personality on the team. he still doesn't know his best team. He doesn't know which tactics yo employ. These are failings but they're not irreversible.
Think he needs to be braver. Forget Val. Forget last season.
Show the group the full first 45 minutes of the QPR away game to show what they are capable of. That 45 was amongst the best I've ever seen as a Barnsley fan.
Be brave Marcus. Impose your identity on the club. If you can't do that then you need to move on.

Well I've been questing some of his decisions all season the bringing on 2 center halfs as midfielders and throwing away a 2 goal lead. Picking odour to play in the front 3. The style of play consistently playing out from the back in our own 3rd putting ourselves under pressure. Sideways backwards, the lack of chances created 6 goals in 9 games.

I said before blackpool, forest and millwall 6 points if we fail to win in our next 2 he should go for me.

You were particularly angry about Cole against QPR. Now you’re championing him starting.

Oduor also didn’t have a bad half yesterday, and also didn’t start. Or play as a striker. Iseka got 30 minutes too. Are you saying you want Thompson to start ahead of him? I’m trying to figure out who the five strikers are that Oduor has leapfrogged ahead of…..

    Consistency is important.

I asked you about those QOR substitutions. If Palmer was spent, and Benson was at risk of putting us down to ten men, then we had three options to change those two players.

    1) Halme
    2) Moon
    3) Williams for Styles and Styles to CM

You’ve questioned Styles in CM in this thread. So assuming the changes were a necessity, what else could we have done? Could have dropped Woodrow in there I guess for the last ten minutes.

    Yes. Yes.....and thrice more Yes!
Gomes and Benson in CM was as clear a pick as you could wish for.
We lacked a ball winner in there. If not at the start.then at half time. It was crying out for Styles to LWB, William's off and Gomea on in the Makelele / Kante destructor role. Its worrying that MS didn't see that.
Unless of course CG, like you say, wasnt fit. But if he wasn't fit he shouldn't have been om the bench.
In adversity we find strength. That should be the theme of every session between now and the next game.

Has moon played center midfield since that cameo? I'm not sure its been done to a death but it didn't work square pegs round holes comes to mind.

How long are you prepared to give schopp? Have you been impressed by his football style? Do you think we have the players to constantly play out from the back? Mads anderson struggled to play out from the back under struber and often mistakes were punished.

When all the pegs were square and all the holes were round then what other option was there on that occasion?

You've been given the substitute options. He could only choose what he had on the bench.

I can summarise my thoughts easily as I think it’s a combination of 2 things for me.

We’re desperately missing Dike and Morris, we were not that great last season until we strengthened up top with those two, I distinctly remember nearly all of the board constantly saying how we needed physical strength up front. They landed and we were able to constantly batter teams for nearly the full 90 minutes. Vic and Odour are nowhere near suitable replacements.

Yes we are missing mowatt but I would have hoped Benson would have been able to slot in, and I think to some extent that’s not one of our major problems.

Defence wise, that’s down to schopp for me, we played the way we did at the back last season for a reason, the players we have can defend, they can’t play football, if we persist with this, rather than get better when Anderson returns (which it should as he also is a decent defender) I can only seeing it getting worse, as he is possibly the worst at trying to play out from the back- it’s just not within his capability. Ismael recognised this and our defence last season went from being a disaster, and making almost laughable errors the previous season to a relatively error free, solid unit.

Im not writing it off yet, but for me we need Morris back, we need to pray the Belgian lad is half decent and schopp needs to recognise the players strengths and set up the team and tactics to suit, at the moment I am struggling to see any tactics or direction.

No because Kitching got a three match ban and Moon is preferred to Halme. Plus players have been fitter, we signed Gomes, and the red card situation might not have been created in other games.

It’s square pegs in round holes, but we didn’t have any round pegs!

I’ve always said the month of October was key. I don’t mind us being in the bottom six if performances and overall play is improving. In my mind the second half of our season was always going to yield more points than the first half.

Some valid points there. Biggest miss for me has been the absence of Carlton Morris. A proper leader of the line and like you I'm praying that Oulare will be the perfect partner for him up front. With Cauley playing in the number 10 role in a changed formation.
A Schopp formation. Not a mixed Schopp/Val formation. Said it earlier. MS now really needs to forget about Val and focus on how he can take us forward.
The man needs to show us he can lead.

Our defenders have looked really comfortable on the ball this season. I’ve been impressed by how easy they’ve made it look - even if it causes a couple of heart attack moments. Helik looks a better signing for a promotion chasing/Premier League team the more he plays at the moment in my eyes. Showing there’s more to him than just a bettering ram defender. I’ve enjoyed Sibbick and Kitching taking the ball on as well.

One thing we do need to stop saying is that Val ‘saw something’ and played a style because of it. As we can see from how West Brom set up, he didn’t identify anything within our current squad and play a certain way - he just played his way. And it was incredibly successful once he got the power and pace up front with options off the bench.

The reason why we could play 3-4-3 under Val and be light in the middle of midfield was because we by passed it.

Trying to pass through the 3rds with absolutely zero width (because he’s trying to do a Guardiola and push the wing backs inside to help. MC have players like which we don’t) and only 2 central midfielders.

It’s all a recipe for disaster and unless he changes we aren’t winning many.

Schopp just isn’t really helping himself I don’t think, as for me, picking a team that could/would include Collins, Helik, Kitching, Benson, Palmer, Styles, Britain, Woodrow and others being slotted in / experimented around them should, IMO, be able to be set up and organised to be getting a better return than 1 win in 10 games.

I think it’s a bit of an understatement to say we’ve only lost one player. Mowatt was a massive loss. I think Sollbauer was also a big loss, albeit off the field. We’ve also lost dike and Morris. We don’t have either the forward line to win arial battles, or the midfield to control games. Ismael had at least one of those going for him throughout last season.

That said, I thought we’d at least be capable of reaching 50 points with a bit to spare, but that’s looking unlikely now. Schopp needs to appreciate how physical this league is, and how little time his inexperienced midfielders will get on the ball when they get it from the defenders, and come up with a game plan to work with what he’s got.

At the moment, he’s reliant on through balls in behind, but the last pass was either under or over hit yesterday, and defences are more organised than what he’s probably used to.

Yesterday was the first time I’ve properly disagreed with his team selection. I would’ve started Sibbick over Moon at RCB & put Styles at LWB but I’m not going to slate him too much for that.

Most of the other games it’s been needs must or people arguing Victor or Oduor or even Miller. Just moaning for mornings sake because we’re understandably nowhere near as good as last season.

When Palmer went off he could have brought cole on and dropped oduor who will never be a striker back into midfield.
He could have brought cole on put oduor at left back and styles in the middle.
He could have brought Williams on and put styles in the middle.
Or he could have put a defender in midfield.

When either of them went off he could have switched to four at the back or five at the back.

I don't think that arguing we should play a striker up front instead of a left wing back is really moaning for moanings sake

You lost me at striker. You also keep offering solutions that include players who’ve been subject to ridicule by yourself and others. So you’re basically suggesting other options, but not necessarily better ones. Everyone’s view will be different on that, but there aren’t any that make a lightbulb go off for the majority.

When we play 3-4-3 with Woodrow, Frieser and oduor I'd say that's three strikers. Now semantics may say it's three forwards rather than strikers but in simple terms it's the same thing. Unless of course you think two out of three of them are strikers and one is a full back.

You're right everyone's view is different but the vast majority disagree with oduor playing there even if they can't decide which of the options should be playing there. By the way I haven't ridiculed those options before have I? I've criticised Cole yes but then I've criticised every player at some point. If your logic means they're all banished from the side and never allowed to be suggested again then it's going to be a very small team we field.
