I used to get extremely stressed out and downright mopey when things weren`t going well at Oakwell - for God`s sake how about Administration and Peter Doyle! My lad is very much like a lot on here where a drift towards the lower echelons of the Championship is like the end of the World. However as I`ve got older (definitely NOT wiser) I feel able to put some perspective on our current lack of success and take in my stride that seasons like last year come along only occasionally for The Reds (teams like Barnsley). Desperately trying not to be patronising but just trying to say that things could be a lot worse than they are - look at Derby and Wednesday. As I stated before older but no less passion for BFC - just perspective.
I'm the same - been watching 43 years and seen most things that the game can throw at us. If we aren't playing well I know we will again sometime in the future. Where we are now is a lot better than the 70's and the old division 4 and as you say more important things like family to stress and worry about
When I first started watching Barnsley we finished sixth in the Championship in the 94/95 season then 10th in the 95/96 season and 2nd in 96/97. We were relegated form the Premier League and then made the Play-Off Final in 2000. Last season was the closest they've come to what I expect (over a full season) since then.
I probably have. It's relative to when you grow up. Whilst I was growing up getting into football it was obvious I was never going to watch Arsenal or Spurs full-time. Barnsley were on the way up and my Dad being a Barnsley supporter wanted to catch that wave. He was right. Naturally the bar was set higher.
SD - I know you care passionately about BFC.I just think your expectations are unrealistic. 100% effort which will occasionally lead to relative success is my expectation - from what I hear of the Blackpool game this was possibly questionable but to expect unqualified success as a Barnsley fan is beyond my reckoning.
Its a massive disappointment for me. You're right. I remember those days with fondness and up until last season it's been just fleeting moments of true happiness in footballing terms. I didn't enjoy promotion's from League 1 as much as most because I don't think we should have been there in the first place. Yes it happens on merits of the team. However, I think boardroom decisions have been Barnsley F.C's biggest hindrance in my time watching them. It's arrogant I know and a bit "wednesday".
It's like watching England win the World Cup and then being disappointed for the next 60 years while they never achieve the same level again. Thankfully most of us are used to the major tournament misery inflicted upon us.
Yeah I'm used to the disappointment. Almost numb to it. It's like a nagging ache. I don't think I'll have happiness in footballing terms until we're in the Premier League again or at least regularly challenging in the Championship. Thankfully I've got other things to occupy me and people in my life now. Football isn't the be all and end all it was for me prior to meeting Laura in 2011. It would be nice for George when he's older to see Barnsley in the Premier League though.
Just think if you started watching the Reds in 1912, everything else must be an anti climax. Starting with Arsenal cheating us and getting promotion in 1919. NB they have never suffered relegation since! Cheating bar stewards.
I am the same and it happened 33 years before I was born. There was a lot of corrupt practice in those days. A conspiracy got Grimsby relegated from division 1 before WW1. Accrington had a rescue plan scuppered by Bob Lord in 1962.
It was probably Barnsley F.C's one and only chance of being a power in the game too. Back then if we'd gained promotion it would have been easier to make a fist of it.
