https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/murray-wallace-millwalls-analysis-work-paid-off-in-barnsley-win/ Interesting that Millwall saw it was our weakness but a lot of our fans like our wide players.
It's not about individual players though, it's about how we are organised. Every team has seen it, and we've done nothing about it.
It's pretty obvious to anyone that saw the Blavkpool, Forest and Milwall games that we're weak down the flanks. A ball into the chanel for someone to run onto usually exposes the lack of pace in the back 3 and the wide midfielders. Sibbick is our quickest defender but can't get a game. Is it time to revert to a back 4?;
I thought we combatted that well on Saturday though. There weren't any balls available over the back of the wing backs as defensively it was more of a back five. Now and again on the counter, but you'll always get that at some point in the game. The defence also did a better job of sliding across as a unit when needed. I like our wide players. I don't like how they've been asked to setup in a lot of the games this season.
Not sure about 4 at the back yet, as the wide 2 drop back to make 5 at the back without the ball. 3 up front is definitely not working though, I'd put 2 up top and an extra man in midfield
I think we'll have some new manager bounce is the new guy has some common sense and starts picking something like what you suggest.
I think that we also struggle to get down the wings going forward. We seem totally incapable of getting to the bye-line and turning defences. How many times have we been able to create chances like the one Cauley scored from at Loftus Road?
It's because if you don't boot/hoof the ball forward, or play fast counter attacking football, the system of a front three can sometimes be crowded as everyone searches for the ball. If the ball goes in to Devante, he's not holding it up and bringing someone in to play who's 20/25 yards away, so naturally Iseka and Woodrow are a lot closer to him. We only have two in the middle who now have to get up the pitch and down, box to box if you will, because the ball isn't sailing over their heads. As a result the #9 is isolated so the other two forwards come closer to the ball to give him options rather than being out wide. Our wing backs have to provide the width when this happens, but if they bomb forward we run the risk of not being setup correctly at the back. Having a Gomes type in there helps, but I do think we're better suited to a midfield three that allows the wing backs to take risks, knowing the CBs can split to the wings and at least one of the CMs would drop in to create a protective bank of four. I know people say football is simple but I find it gets more complicated every year (or I just get older and less wiser!).
I can't even get the FanZone open mate. Turnstiles working properly would be the least of our worries if I had more responsibility.
I know he did, but I'd play a proper midfielder and keep Cauley up front. That's where he can do most damage getting on the end of things and converting chances. Caley dropping deep (sometimes into defence) is a complete waste
This is what most people I talk to have been saying. Midfield is the problem, we're lacking numbers/quality in there and it's hurting us at both ends of the field.
I think if we're going to play a defender in midfield it has to be Jordan Williams simply because he's the best on the ball and looks to play forwards. I'd even factor in Oduor in midfield over Moon or Brittain. I'd go with five too.
