Imagine if the unbelievable happened - we got morris, benson, oulare and mads fit and everything clicked and we went on a run akin to 2015/16 and we ended up in the playoffs once again. We just miss out in the final once more to a late goal. A team recently relegated from the prem comes in for Schopp close season - does he jump at the first chance to move up or does he remember how the club stood by him when he was on his ass and over 80% of the fans wanted him out? Struber was off, Val was off, Johnson was off. No loyalty in football or it is very rare. We are not Watford but not far behind with the manager merry-go-round.
Excellent post and it's what I've been banging on about for a while. The first sign of success and these head coaches just **** off. I have no affinity to them anymore but they can't have it all their own way. If they're successful then we reluctantly accept that they move on and we are hopefully well compensated for their departure. If they're crap (as Schopp is proving to be at present) then they should be sacked.
It think this is right. The alacrity with which managers jump ship cuts both ways. Don't much like it, but that's the way it is. Pretty clear that Oakwell is just a revolving door for everyone but the fans. Can't think of another club in the entire top four divisions that has had as many changes of personnel in such a short time. Is the cat still here?
What loyalty? He's 11 league games into a 3 year contract - it isn't a demonstration of "loyalty" that the board haven't sacked him, as dire as the last few weeks have been. if anything, the fact that he's under so much pressure so soon vindicates the lack of loyalty shown by the previous 2. Had they stayed on and started their next season the same way they'd have been under exactly the same pressure, regardless of their previous success. Like you say, it goes both ways. No patience to be found anywhere in football any more. Much like the rest of society.
I think the idea of a release clause in the coach's contract needs to be tweaked. Either to only kick in after season 2, or at least to only be valid during a window in which the club's pre-season or season won't be impacted. Preferably both. At the end of last season the club just put their heads in the sand, hoping that nobody would stump up the 2m. Or worse still, waiting and hoping that they would. The club say that coaches won't come if the release clause isn't there, well frankly, if they're going to insist on a clause that means they can be poached at any given time, without anything we can do, then we shouldn't want them here. As good as Ismael was, I'd rather we'd had a coach that got us to mid table and didn't bugger off after 8 months, taking a bunch of staff with him.
What I find unbelievable in the o.p. is that you should imagine that Oulare is ever fit. Quite honestly I've got more chance of copping off with Jo Blythe than that happening. Just ask her.
I'm not so sure TBH. I think a release clause guarantees the club a good level of renumeration, should someone come in for the manager. The reported £2 million we got for VI is hardly chickenfeed to Barnsley FC. If a manager is successful they will inevitably move on. If they are unsuccessful they would be sacked. I do think a probation period of 6 months would be a good idea. If a manager fails to achieve certain KPI's the club should be able to terminate the contract, maybe with a small amount of compensation at best.
I definitely think they were hoping someone would come in for val, money is the only thing these guys are interested in. Not interested in the detriment of the team or club, if they were schopp would have been sacked at the weekend.
I agree. One thing there isn't a shortage of us coaches who'd love a chance to manage in England in the second division. Rotherham, Wycombe, Hull , Coventry, all managed to keep hold of their managers for a period of time.
£2m is definitely a big chunk of money, but if we're going to lose any decent coaches after less than a year, we'll eventually end up with a dud. Not to mention, the impact having a new coach so regularly has on the squad, with players brought in because they match a profile needed by the previous coach. The fact that the clause seems to be constantly active means we'll never have any certainty. That's why I suggested a window where the clause is active.
Yes, we seem to be happy to resign ourselves to the fact that we have to lose players, staff etc... Yet turnover at other clubs with similar budgets doesn't seem so hectic.
They were all relegated. It's easy to keep hold of a struggling manager because no-one else is interested. The fact they were also promoted maybe shows a bit of two way loyalty. We go down the sacking route if we're relegated or struggling e.g Morais, Stendel and the selling route if they do a descent job e.g. Struber, Isnael. We going to have to get used to having managers for not much more than a year.
Exactly how I felt when we appointed him. If he's good, he'll **** off. Like Struber, like Val and like how Stendel tried to. If he's no good, we'll sack him. I'm honestly shocked that's he's still here. There's no quick fix to the mess we find ourselves in, but there's only one way we're going unless the powers that be do something.
The only ones with any loyalty are the supporters. To players, and staff, it's just a job. Hence, if someone is underperforming, and it is within the club's gift to get shut of them, well, emotionless business decisions, are emotionless business decisions. Players and coaches can't have it both ways. Spouting platitudes about the fans, and about building something long-term, only to leave at the first opportunity. In that case, you get sacked very quickly, too. If anything, we give duds too much time (as a club, not just these owners.) The dwarf should have been sacked on the whistle at Altrincham. Stendel should have gone sooner - one win in 17, was it? And Schopp is still here.
