Yes of course. I know people that say it within Yorkshire though where Barnsley will be known by 95% of the population.

Along the same vain - people claim to be straight talking and like other people who are - but many have a degree in taking umbrage at perceived slights or comments about the area, the town or its people - and are actively looking for it everywhere (its probably a wider Yorkshire thing TBF).

I've likely said this before... I've never understood being proud to be from an area. You just get popped out wherever you're popped out. And you can move wherever you want to move to.

It's not a criticism by the way, it's just that I've never felt that way. I was born in Barnsley, worked and lived in Sheffield and Leeds. Worked and lived in London. They all served a purpose at given times in my life, and I've travelled to lots of places that I've loved being in, or aspects of and preferred more than my hometown or where I've subsequently lived thereafter.

Maybe theres just a nomad in me that doesn't feel tied to places, or that doesn't have ties to places.

As I say, it's not a criticism at all, just sharing that I don't necessarily feel those connections of birth and existence.

It all depends on the number of Turkish people who live in the vicinity, which ought to be low as we voted against "the Turkish hoards" over running the country back in 2016, did we not?

By the same tone, there seem to be a number of posters (not all) who love to denigrate the town & people once they themselves have actually left. They seem to find fault in those of us who are happy to have stayed and are more than willing to criticise us in as a breath taking condescending manner as possible.

When youngsters become the oldens and their kids are telling em how out of date with the world they are, they may realise.and then not offer up any defence of their views. Reight.

I think some people don't enjoy living in towns.

You don't get the cosmopolitan population or the cultural diversity of a city and you don't get the rural peace and quiet of a village. I can see why Barnsley isn't for everyone, but I don't see the need to pull it down either.

I can't see me ever leaving, I've had job offers in other, more affluent areas of the country but my entire family is here and I'd rather earn a bit less than not be able to see them as and when I wanted.

I support Barnsley because I'm proud of it and I'm proud to be from Yorkshire too. I always tell people I'm from Barnsley even if they're not likely to know where it is.
That doesn't mean I look at the town and see it through completely rose tinted spectacles as though there's nothing wrong with it that could be improved.
As with everything the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Is it the worst place in the world? Definitely no. I enjoyed growing up there. Could it be better? Yes, of course it could. Not to accept that is just to stagnate.

I have no problems with people who, for whatever reason, leave the area. Live and let live, as far as I'm concerned. Neither am I blind to many problems faced by the town. Personally speaking, I would never want to live in a city, but accept others not only like it but revel in it. I just fail to grasp the need to attack & denigrate the town & it's people once they've left for pastures new.

Born in Hudds, lived for a year at various points in Ripon, York, China and (mostly Perth) Australia. Spent past 5 years in Wakefield and now I'm in Barnsley.

I like the countryside and down to earth mentality of where im from and where I live now. I feel connected with it and didn't in all the other places I've lived (even though I'd still emigrate for a better climate and lifestyle).

I think that's what it comes down to. Make the most of places while you're there, and if you don't feel suited, find somewhere that does suit you. Life's short.

All places can be improved but like anything on here it is the description given that cuts It`s like some of our own fans singing Barnsley`s a shithole I want to go home.

They are poor at coping with covid. It's currently got the 5th highest infection rate in the country of 651.0 with only Trafford, Peterborough, Cheshire East and Bath & North East Somerset above it. It's been regularly in and around the top ten for a lot of the pandemic.

I'm not in a position to comment too much because I left the town in 1987. We left for work reasons alone so nothing to do with the town. I've gone back on a fairly regular basis for football etc. Have I ever wanted to move back? No. There's plenty of nice places to live, at home and abroad.
I'm not going to go into the things that I thought were wrong with the town when I lived there as it will clearly get some people's backs up. I can think of a lot worse places to live though and there's parts of the surrounding area I'd happily live in. I always wanted to end up by the sea though so I wouldn't swap where I am. :)

In my original post I said some folk, not all, and clearly you are not part of the some. I could name loads of places that I would like to live, but Barnsley at the moment is the place for me.
