Manager than he is given credit for, got us to a cup final and left here with just short of 40 percent win average,Hunter had 41 percent back in day and he is considered one of our best He as just got Sunderland into the quarter finals of League cup, after getting them their first silverware in years last season Think he should be held in higher regard as a manager IMHO ,but the way he left us will always rankle with BFC fans
Better than some on here give him credit for. The way some of our fans talk about him you would think he was Morais 2.0. His issue has always been that he and his sides go through weird streaks where they win a few in a row then lose a few so on. This trend seems to have followed him around with all his sides. Does seem to be a good coach for improving players though and uses the loan market well.
I'd have him back in place of Schopp that's for sure. Just his buzz words/phrases (like bomb alley) and sound bites that drove me crackers.
I never thought Hunter was one the best, inherited Clarke's team... Was Clarke who signed Glavin Aylott Parker and Ian Evans. As for LJ.. I liked him, signed some decent players and left us better than he found us..
I thought he was decent enough and one of the better coaches we have had in recent years. The streak thing suggests to me he's either not got a plan B, runs out of steam in motivating players or is burning them out. Only things I can think of that would explain that pattern really.
No. Given the squad he had at his disposal the first half of that season was possibly the worst performance by a Barnsley manager ever. His incompetence was the only thing that stopped us from running away with the league title that year.
That win percentage is pretty poor for us isn’t it? Considering we were a league one club with plenty of good players. I’d like to think that unless there’s some serious mitigating factors that we’re always towards the top end of league one. He’s done ok up to now at Sunderland but ultimately he’ll be judged on whether they get promoted or not.
No. He's abysmal. As well as being a snake, and a dwarf, he's a horrendous manager. I'd sooner have Morais.
But some on here dint like him because he was only 5ft 5ins tall. Or when we went in for Sean O'Driscoll.. they didn't like the way he spoke. so don't want him, laughable really. All that does is show how there head operates..
Dunno how true the list is (Leadbitter has retired since) but that's some salaries he's got in his squad for division three..... https://salarysport.com/football/sky-bet-league-one/sunderland/
Did you see the QPR so called pens!!?? They're all in love with him atm at Sunderland but when the wheels start coming off (as they will) it could be interesting.
I can't see how they would know what salaries each individual player is on as it isn't in the public domain. I wouldn't be shocked if some of those figures for the likes of McGeady are true though.
not really just trying to pop a thread on that doesn't involve doom and gloom and involve the words "as he gone yet", just saw result last night at QPR and thought LJ on another cup run and wondered if on reflection people thought maybe he wasn't the worst we had
I hope ours aren't true or we've given away our second highest earner for the season..... https://salarysport.com/football/sky-bet-championship/barnsley/
I've warmed to him more since he left. I really wanted him to succeed whilst he was here. However, I see similarities between him and Schopp. During the eight game losing run Johnson wouldn't change anything then was forced to play two in the middle when Scowen got injured. If Scowen hadn't got injured he'd have carried on with the 4-5-1.
Danny Wilson got a lot of the players in that became the great 2015/16 side under Johnson and Hecky and went through most of the pain in getting them embedded and up to speed given a lot of them had come up the leagues. Winall, Hourihane, Roberts, Scowen, G Williams, Davies was the spine of a great team that got us promoted. We had that awful start until we got the mindset coach in to help them., our season turned around and we never looked back. So would Lee Johnson have got those players in? Wilson persisted with Hourihane and protected him when he had bad games. I still very clearly remember him getting booed off one game and Wilson subbed him. He came back stronger to become one of the best players we've ever had. So Lee Johnson is a good manager but he inherited some good players too. What I did like about him is he never faultered in his approach and belief. Id have him in a heartbeat over schopp. But Danny is my all time fave and was gutted when he wasn't able to finish the job the second time around. I think he had stuff going on off the field so maybe this weighed down on him? Dunno for sure - I'm speculating there. But Wilson is up there in the top 3 ever managers. Johnson mid table for me. I wish Danny was still involved in the the club in some way. Maybe in the recruitment side as he could spot a player!
He isnt one of my favourites and how he survived a winless 10 game streak I dont know but eventually he turned us around - would we still have gone up if he had stayed - we will never know. He did a good job to save Bristol when he joined and had them a top half Championship side for a few years before they got bored - Never understood how he could go for 10 games without a win then undefeated for 10 games - did it with us and Bristol - really strange I wouldnt want him back - but he is in a different class to Schopp - I dont think the players would look so lost under Lil' Lee
