What about.... " I have friends who just happen to be of a different ethnicity?" Surely it is difficult to be in that position AND be a racist? A bit of a stretch assuming someone who states that as a defence for accusations of racism is being disingenuous.
It’s not though. I’ve got friends who have perfectly good relationships with ex-colleagues of various ethnicities, but in smaller groups of just white people have said things that are terribly racist. I find it difficult to believe that those few people are unique. The other elephant in the room, is that it’s perfectly reasonable, and likely quite common for people of colour to also hold some racist views.
The advert for google with Rashford is quite good. You need to establish for yourself amongst your own peers what is acceptable in that group. However, you haven't to assume it's one size fits all.
Loved the story of Mick macarthy as a youngster refusing to go with a host football family abroad unless they also took his friend. Others would have "friends" but not care much about the discrimination they may face.
