Slow news day. Sun journo decides he needs to fill some column inches so fires up the Paddy Power website to see who's in the lead.
The piece is by Micheal Morgan who is a well respected Yorkshire journo of many years.. I wouldn't be so quick to rubbish it.
Not a chance. Why would Wilder compound a bad final season at Sheff U by taking on the impossible challenge and working for Conway? He still has a fewer brownie points in the bank - better to wait for another club (Cardiff?).
A clock is right twice a day, the only trouble is the Sun newspaper is never right. Wilder will only come if he is in complete charge.
Well one good reason Barnsley opposed to Cardiff would be he doesn't need to move home. To my knowledge he still lives local. However why would he come to Barnsley. Here's hoping. Would change my view of the ambition of the owners.
Slightly off at a tangent. Is the CEO making out we're skint and won't be signing players unless we sell to try and drive down prices of players we would want to sign? Reason I ask this is after his recent comments about lack of sales I can't see why any self respecting Head Coach would want to touch us knowing he'd have to sell two or three first teamers in January.
I don't believe that there's the remotest chance that Wilder will be the new head coach. The kind of salary that others would be willing to pay him is way more than anything our owners would contemplate paying.
All swings and roundabouts though. If we go down, we'll lose more money than we'd have to pay Wilder. If he proves he's still got it, he'll get a move to a more fashionable, better paying club and we'll cover the cost of his wages plus a bit in compo. All the players will be worth more and we can sell them for a bigger profit.
Wilder to me gives the impression of someone that's not money orientated and just loves the game and wants to work. I bet after working constantly for decades he's bored stiff not being in the game for so long. I wouldn't be so quick to say he wouldn't be interested.
Wilder seems to me like a Paul Warne type. If the project suits him he's happy to be there for the long haul. I could see him staying even if we're relegated.
Working for Conway isn't so impossible as Big Val proved. Plus he'll have a very decent squad at his disposal. Money aside, it's not particularly far-fetched, at least not from a purely footballing point of view.
They've probably read the Sun article. Next, The Mirror will see the new odds, write a similar story, and then he'll be down to evens. Self perpetuating!
Very few managers with a reputation in the English game will be interested once the transfer policy is explained to them.
He's a tracksuit manager. I'm sure if Conway and Co gave him assurances about his future he'd take the job.
