I have questions and it's been suggested that this might be the best place to ask them. So, before I start, I'd like to say that this is a genuine quest for knowledge which I've frequently over the years thought I'd gotten the answers too, and then just as frequently found out that they were incorrect. It's not coming from any political agenda, this has nothing to do with Brexit etc.

Right, so can someone please explain to me a) what land exactly makes up Britain? I know N.I. isn't in Britain, as to other places Im confused, Isle of Man etc.

    b) If somewhere isn't in Britain, how can the inhabitants be British, ex. N.I.?

    c) What land exactly makes up the UK?

    d) If English, Welsh etc is a nationality, then when people say they are British that's not their nationality? (But I'm sure I've seen it on forms etc as an option?)

    e) Is Britain or the UK the official name of the country, or does that alter depending on which bits you're talking about like 'GB and N.I.'?

    f) I've just read online that Jersey isn't part of the UK or Britain, but the UK or Britain have an obligation to defend it (and others)...again, I don't understand.

    g) How does overseas stuff work like Turks and Caicos ? They aren't part of the country of Britain or UK but they are run by Britain? Protected by Britain?

Ok, that's about it. Like I said, it's not that I haven't at one point or another looked these questions up, but the answers seem to come rapidly and then either be partially or wholly incorrect. So if anyone answers this, please just answer what you're 100% definite about. Thanks :)

My understanding is the land mass that makes up England, Scotland and Wales is Great Britain. Adding Northern Ireland to mix then makes it all into the United Kingdom. Isle of Man is a self governing dependency, as is the Channel islands (I think?).

For what it's worth, I'm English but consider myself British. I'd prefer to call myself European though.

So you trust the opinionated ramblings from a randomer on here versus the might of Google to obtain your facts?
Sounds like a fun and scarey way of living life.

In regards to question F, as far as I understand it the Channel Islands belong to the Crown, due to being owned by William the Conqueror before he took the English throne.

Well, the way I see it, most people on this site are probably British, and I've read quite a few threads where people debated without letting it go to put and where intelligent answers were given. And once again IALREADY TRIED GOOGLE. I'm sure the info is hidden in there somewhere but I've yet to find all questions answered and not then disputed by someone else.

    Official name is

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as far as I'm aware.

From that you can deduce that adding NI makes it the UK. Great Britain being England Wales and Scotland

    I think

On many forms, your asked to say your nationality. These often have British and Irish listed separately. So northern Ireland folk I would assume just tick Irish....

Don’t know if it’s 100% correct but I read somewhere that the overseas territories are the ones that didn’t wasn’t full independence but wanted British Protection but not ruled by them .
I know you wanted positive answers but I’m sure that’s how it is overseas .

I always took the British Isles to mean all the mainland and islands of Great Britian and Northern Island, but I read somewhere it also includes the Republic Of Ireland which just seems wrong to me.

Ahh now this one I know. It used to mean GB and Ireland and all the island's around, but it's use now is only geographical and Ireland officially don't use it at all as it leads to confusion. GB don't use it officially when dealing with Ireland either.

My new passport says British passport, then ,United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , it doesn’t mention the Republic of South Yorkshire which is disappointing
