Can’t say he doesn’t try but he looks lost and well short of confidence to me. For instance there was a moment in the second half when he picked the ball up on the right moved diagonally towards the penalty area, looked a bit like he thought about shooting but in the end he just ran aimlessly across the area until he lost it. Definitely not worth his place on current form
It's not a lack of effort. Woodrow is all over the place and often in the wrong place. He was however, last night, heading it away from our goal more than anyone else right at the death. He needs to be told that there is no point in simply standing under where the ball drops - he needs to do something beyond looking for a wrestling match, otherwise he'll lose it and he won't get any sympathy from the ref. He also needs to be treated on merit like all the other players. On merit at the moment you could argue that Cole Vic and Iseka (with Carlton and Bad Back Belgique if fit) deserve more prominent consideration, if Cauley's going to be turning in the same level of performance as last night.
He covers a lot of ground but in my opinion never actually gets stuck in. If there's a challenge to be made he'd rather dive to the floor than make it. If there's a header to be won he'd rather stand still. A loose ball a few yards away? Not his problem. He will get all over the pitch standing in positions that limit he oppositions options but he won't actually get stuck in very often. I think that's why some say he works hard because he gets about but some say he doesn't becaue he ducks out a lot
Absolutely spot on post. I'm not a Woodrow fan at all, I've been very critical of him for a while, BUT I thought he was great last night. He's a smart player, not everything he tries comes off, as he's still adapting to his deeper role. As for being captain I thought he bossed and chivvied the players on really well too. Silly yellow though. Onwards and upwards.
I think he's already equalled Mowatt for goals from direct free kicks, unless you count his direct corner against Middlesbrough. Pretty sure the free kick at QPR was his only one last season, and have to go back to the League 1 season for his last one before that.
I could only think of one but said two because I thought I was bound to be wrong. Nothing like facts getting in the way of a good ol' BBS rant!
To be honest, I wouldn't be relying on my memory for any facts. He could've scored 10 and I've forgotten them!
50% of the people in this thread have clearly got it horribly wrong, the question is which 50%. Is he such a clever player that he can pull the wool over the eyes of half the fans? Is there an ignorance of what he's been asked to do? Are our tactics getting the best out of him? Do some people only measure his contribution by on target shots and goals? One thing's for sure. Keep on publicly slagging him off - like the guy someone was sat near in this thread - and he'll be off the team sheet permanently in January.
I'm pretty sure people are allowed to call it as they see it regarding a players performance. As far as I'm concerned, a break for a couple of games and freeing him of the captain's shackles may well help Woodrow get back to his best. I desperately want him to do well, but he's been way below what I would expect from him for about a year now. That's not me being unfair or not understanding what's expected of him, that's just me stating my opinion.
Slagging a player off and hurling personal insults is never helpful. Pointing out observations in a reasonable manner is typically helpful.
Whether they are as good as an individual expects is subjective and down to personal opinion, but other metrics are empirical and you can accept facts and be correct, or fly in the face of them and be wrong. Only the clubs data analysts and the coaches know whether Cauley is hitting the performance indicators in terms of effort. We would all like Cauley to score more goals, but is he missing opportunities or is the team not creating the chances? Is Cauley following coaches instructions?
His performances and effectiveness in games is open for fair debate, but his effort is there in every game. I do not see or get this lack of effort or only 50% trying at all.
He needs to play in his normal position not his usual free role, I'd have Helik or Anderson as captain too
I haven't mentioned effort, other than to say that his effort shouldn't be questioned. Performance and effort are different things. His effort is good, his performance is poor.
He's a clubman. Obviously loves the place. More of a 'club captain' and representative than a 'team captain' on matchday. He's a player. We know that. Anyone says different needs their bumps feeling. And you cannot really fault his effort - most weeks (except maybe when his head goes down). He basically .............. cares. And because of that he has carried a burden on his shoulders. It has manifested in games. His form has suffered. Any dedicated professional worth his salt wants to play every game. But any professional worth his salt also knows deep down when it is time for a rest. I believe he needs a game or two on the bench. It will do him good whether he likes the idea or not.
I wasn't aiming the comment at you, it was more a general reply to the thread, but I think a lot of people think that he isn't performing at the moment because he isn't scoring enough goals. If the coaches have asked him to do a different job, and he's doing that job well, it's not for us to say he isn't performing.
