well seeing as Sri Lanka are pretty poor and the Windies don't travel well in that neck of the woods our group was pretty even whereas NZ odds were heavily stacked against them, you must take into account the location of the event, which favoured India & Pakistan
I think in the next 12 months before the next t20 World Cup we will see Sri Lanka rise again. They have a good young team with some decent prospects. Wanindu Hasaranga especially looks an exciting player. Feel free to bump this in 12 months if Sri Lanka do useless It's a shame that teams made the semi finals on run rate and not just points. Maybe they could expand the competition? The teams that finish top of both groups go straight to the semi finals. Then you can have two 'quarter' finals where 2nd in one group plays 3rd in the other. The winners of those two then go to the semi finals. It only adds two more matches.
perhaps Sri Lanka "poor" should be replaced with inexperienced then and yes the format could have been expanded but guessing the time frame was a factor, but even using say head to head above nrr our group would have remained the same in the 2 qualifying, maybe a 2nd round robin with the top 3 may have helped, but was it spain 82 world cup that did that and england didn't lose but still got knocked out?
I think the format has been just about perfect, keeping in mind the covid restrictions. I would have maybe had top 4 from each group qualify for the Quarter Finals - but it's no big deal. It was strange that Moeen didn't bowl - but then his effective replacement in Livingstone performed admirably. Our white ball team has been something else over the past 6 years or so - Morgan and the coaching staff completely turned it upside down from when we used to limp to 260 in ODI's What is interesting though is the ages of all the players. I think 9 of the 11 yesterday are over the age of 30 - so there'll need to be an overhaul pretty soon. Hopefully the building blocks are in place so new players can be integrated gradually, rather than half the team retiring at once. The next captain will be so important in white ball cricket - I wouldn't have a clue who to suggest though.
Agree about Sri Lanka and their emerging youngsters. It’s a bit worrying that we don’t have many ourselves. Our average age was over 32 and we only had 2 players below 30 in the first few games. I think we’ve some ODI’s coming up in the West Indies so we’ll have to start rebuilding. As it stands, I can see us dropping down the ladder over the next few years just like the Windies and Sri Lanka have done.
It was really only an over that stopped us winning, so I don't think an extra bowler would have made much difference, they'd have had to hut the ground running in a very important match and no guarantees they'd have performed any better.
That's my argument, Helen. The extra bowler could have been far more beneficial than having Billings in the side,
My thoughts were that 3 overs from bowlers who are "front line" changed the gam NZ`s way. One each from Jordan Rasheed and Woakes. Bossing it until then.
What will make it difficult is the fact that there's another t20 world cup next year, then an ODI world cup the year after. But they have been bringing younger players into the t20 team. Livingstone has broken into the best 11 now, and I think Curran and Archer would probably have been in if fit (Archer definitely). Then we've seen Mahmood and Parkinson feature in bilateral series and would expect they'll get more chances in future series. Then you have the likes of Phil Salt and others who played in the ODI series in the summer, and it would be a surprise if Brook doesn't force his way into contention as well, while players like Roy and Bairstow haven't really looked as undroppable in the 20 over format, unlike the 50. So would expect a few tweaks to the t20 team during the next 12 months. The 50 over team is a bit more of a concern. The top 6 of Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Stokes and Buttler has become very well established and can only see it being broken into if Morgan retires. They might try Livingstone at 7, but it would be dangerous to try and get him to share 5th bowler duties with Stokes. At some point they'll have to break up the opening partnership that has brought so much success, but not sure what other openers are likely to take their place. Add to that, we've still not replaced Plunkett with anybody that can take anything like as many wickets in the middle overs.
Come on Pakistan!! Hope they thrash the convicts. Pity they lost the toss, seems so ridiculous that the toss should have such a huge influence on the outcomes.
Cummings and Starc showing how to bowl at the death here. Pakistan probably a few below par if there's no dew, and 15-20 light if there is.
