Who captains a football team makes more interesting debate in the pub if you are bored. It’s a total irrelevance to what happens on the pitch. The only time it’s an issue is if he is only in the team because he is the captain. I think if we are playing 3 strikers he is definitely in our top 3 forwards. However he needs to up his game and also the coach needs to find better service for him
There are a lot of people underestimating the role of a captain generally on this thread. There are certainly plenty underestimating the role of a captain in providing leadership on the field to all the young kids we have in our current team. They look rudderless at the moment. Helik should be leading the back line regardless, he should be a leader regardless. Of course. But the captaincy itself might add something to him. It’s certainly added nothing to Woodrow. Other than pressure and undroppability. It might hurt Woodrow to lose the captaincy - and I don’t want to detriment any chance he has of returning to form. But he was the wrong choice. It should have gone to Helik. (Well, after they’d made the error of letting Sollbauer leave, that is). Like Bahre was the wrong choice over Mowatt, like Mawson was the wrong choice over Hourihane. Those were rectified quite quickly.
There have been plenty of signs of Woodrow encouraging players, geeing them up and trying to guide them. But people will see what they want to see and conflate their other views of him.
About Mike Sheron. I rated him highly. I thought if Steve Parkin hadn't broken up his partnership with Bruce Dyer in favour of Richard Naylor we'd have stayed up in 2001/2. Him and Dyer were firing us to midtable and safety until Parkin's brain fart.
Playing devil's advocate, if we won the first 7 on the spin under Asbaghi* with Woodrow as captain^ you'd still have no faith in the Head Coach? * not going to happen ^ not really that important
He does not need dropping, he needs playing in his right position & for him to receive some service instead of him being messed about , he is a striker, play him as one.
He needs to play up top in a two alongside a big man, which would be Morris (given Obbi is a permanent sick note). Having said that, if we do play a two he wouldn't be first choice for me. It'd be Morris and Iseka.
Morris' all round game is better than Woodrow's too. He can play with the ball on the deck and in the air. He can get in behind and play with his back to goal holding it up.
His position as captain is a non issue for me it’s football not cricket. Unless his performances improve then he should be dropped though.
Everyone, Sheron included, knew he was just seeing his contract out, game after game. He was quite similar in terms of impact as Woodrow has recently been.
