I don't know either. But these appear spectacularly ineffective to me. I don't remember us all catching measles after our measles jabs and everyone just shrugging their shoulder and acknowledging that it was never claimed to be 100% effective. No one appears to be questioning that everyone is being jabbed and everyone is still getting Covid.

 

No, there isn't. The Measles part of MMR is very effective; Mumps less so - which is why in normal years you often get Mumps outbreaks during Fresher's week.

Infection by measles confers life long immunity - coupled with a very good vaccination means that the number of people susceptible to measles infection is low - outbreaks do still happen - and before COVID had started to increase.

The COVID vaccines aren't anywhere near as good as the measles vaccine - but they are helping - a lot.

You are missing two relevant points.
1 no vaccines are 100%.Using exceptions as a valid reason to discount mass vaccinations us disingenuous.
2 Many people vaccinated or otherwise admitted with Covid are often elderly, gave pre existing conditions or both. It may be a different percentage in UK for demographic reasons but here in Italy hospital admissions and ICU cases for Covid have been at 92%+for months. Almost ALl deaths have been from elderly patients with pre existing conditions.

 

One argument against our entire response to Covid 19 was exactly what you have just written, and that our response was causing death and misery to people who were not already dying of pre existing medical conditions, because people were no longer being screened and treated for conditions that would save many years of healthy lives. And now, 20 months on, with NHS waiting lists approaching 6 million and expected to rise to 12 million by 2025, this is being used as an argument that we've had a successful vaccination program and I'm being disingenuous. Ok. And I'm not against a vaccination programme BTW, but I would have hope what was released to be far more effective than it is and that people were still allowed freedom of choice.

 

OK get your point but medical science is what it is and nature tends to win early rounds. A global pandemic has not been seen since the Black Death ravaged Europe and J am not sure the Spanish flu just after WW1 counts..was it an epidemic. Either way the sheer numbers of unvaccinated Worldwide particularly in underdeveloped economies with poor health services means more likelihood of mutations negating all or some of the protection provided by vaccines. The problem is medical science against nature is ALWAYS reactive, unlike other science like Global warming where it is possible to predict with some level of accuracy what comes next. When it comes to viruses we cannot predict what nature will throw at us next.

 

Spanish Flu was a Global Pandemic. There have been two since: Asian Flu in 1957-58 and Hong Kong Flu in 1968-69 - we're nothing if not xenophobic.

Ah senility memory failure beckons. I forgot about the last two. The Spanish flu was more often referred to as the 'Great influenza epidemic' (as alluded to in the opening sentence of the link), but as you say it was a Pandemic. Funny how the last two and (according to some research papers) the first one listed above are said to have possibly originated in China albeit (the misnamed) Spanish flu may have mutated in USA into something more deadly before being spread across Europe due to WW1 and US troop movements. Then again China is a vast land mass with a huge and diverse population, fauna and climates so it is hardly surprising that many diseases and viruses start there. I believe the Black death plague spread to Europe via the Silk Road trade routes as well.

 

Personally, I find the nation’s lapse in rational thought & judgement as, if not more, concerning than the covid virus. The two conditions are not unrelated.
Try losing a couple of friends & adopting a virus orphan dog, then see how you feel about the petty inconvenience of a face mask.
