I agree with you Loko. How bloody frustrating is it that potential resale value is actually driving it though? We recruit up and coming managers from the continent not to progress the club but to move them on at a profit at the earliest opportunity. And the only reason they come to us is because we're a stepping stone, so of course they'll leave at the first opportunity. No one will convince me that Asbaghi's appointment was about keeping us in the Championship, there were multiple options that were a safer bet if that was the priority. It's again all about the value we can get for him when he leaves. Barnsley FC's core purpose is to be a football club but our owners have made that subsidiary to making money.
Difficult but not impossible and at least try and appease the fans that they at least tried to retain him , Instead of released statements of they matched his buy out clause and the players value didn’t rise . Instead of acting like the Italian home guard , it might not have worked but at least I’d have thought they were doing their best for the club .
Trouble is Marlon, once the valuation was met we couldn’t refuse. It’s a real chicken and egg scenario, if true as claimed we have to put these clauses in to attract them in first place.
Val was jobless and under a bit of a cloud for breaking Covid rules. The ball wasn't entirely in his court surely?
I think that’s debatable. But what isn’t debatable is that it was clear that he was a good coach, and a good fit for us by last December. I think most clubs would’ve been offering him a new contract by then. Why do we seem to be the only club that resigns itself to losing their coach after a decent 9 months?
I agree we couldn’t refuse but we could have tried to convince him to stay . Look there’s no way am I saying he should have refused but also should just we roll over . We seemed too content that they matched his buyout and maybe it would have been on deaf ears but at least I would have felt they doing the best for the club . Putting statements out that players didn’t rise in value under his tenure doesn’t actually fill me with confidence .
Of course not, it’s not a one way street, just saying if as Conway(I think) said we have to put them in to attract then, minute we insert it we have less control over keeping someone.
Then we should stop inserting them, and find somebody that isn’t already eying the exit door after less than a year
Why? Blackpool have extended Critchley’s contract this season. Jones is in his third season in his second spell at Luton, his first spell lasted longer than we’ve had anyone last for a while as well. Why are we the only club that’s happy to resign itself to losing anyone after 9 good months?
Is it any different elsewhere though? Ryan Lowe was at Plymouth knowing success would get him in the Championship, either with Plymouth or someone else. If he turns Preston around then he’s up for West Brom, Fulham, Watford, etc. and another chance to increase his salary and stature of club. I do know what you mean, but I feel as supporters we get bogged down assuming we’re any different to all the other teams of our size. In modern football we’re not much different to the others.
I agree leythtyke. There clearly are examples of managers who have been with their club for a period. Simon Weaver, Gareth Ainsworth, John Coleman, Mark Robins, Paul Warne, Michael Duff etc. The suggestion that it's not feasible for us to attract and keep a manager for a period is inconsistent with other clubs experience. But it'll never happen if the policy is to recruit managers with the specific aim of moving them on for profit.
Jones is a strange example considering he jumped at the first job offered and thankfully, for him, was taken back when he failed. Sure he’ll think twice next time which is good for Luton.
This thread was about how under his time here how did he improve our players as i think his style of play put them back a year in their development? The plan is i understand to sign young hungry players and improve them year on year, sell a few each season to keep the money coming in and be a sustainable not debt ridden club? Under Poya we may now go back to that model unfortunately it probably will be in league 1 and i believe Vals style of play during his time here is in part to blame.
There’s nothing wrong with us wanting managers to stay, but again everyone of those you have listed with the exception of Robins came from no experience into their first club. Nothing wrong with that, but imagine the uproar if we said we had recruited a former lower league player with no management experience? The above doesn’t mean our current system is right, just showing how hard it is to get it right
I'm not suggesting we are any different Loko. And I understand our position in the pecking order. What I think is very different is the intent driving the appointment. Preston haven't recruited Ryan Lowe specifically so that they can move him on for a profit in 12 months time whereas I believe that's exactly what drives our recruitment.
Thats fair. But I’d also suggest that we’re just being smart about benefitting from success whereas other clubs find themselves negotiating compensation and probably getting a lot less than we do. Could debate on both sides of that coin.
