The Joey Barton part aside sounds like Luke not really been pulling up any trees. Sadly reminiscent of his time here. Looks like he’s going to throw his career away at this rate.
Was hoping moving closer to home would help him with his mental health. But it may well be that mentally he's not cut out to be a professional footballer and he'd be happier doing something else and having football as a hobby.
I’m sure he’s probably been given access to some of the best mental health treatments that many of us would have to wait months or years to receive- whilst sympathetic to the situation it does come to a point where you might have to consider an alternative path. It’s what I did.
The local press seem to be sticking up for how Barton was with Thomas...... https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/luke-thomas-sends-message-bristol-7087294 But then they say he's coming back to training with us in July when they obviously mean June. No goals and only five assists in 28 games for a team that got promoted. If we can cut a deal with them as Barton wants to keep him, we should do.
He's always had talent. If he can get his mental state right and he's managed properly he could be an asset in L1. I'd be inclined to give him a go next season, we're hardly throng with creative players.
If he’s happier down there near his home then we should try and work a deal out, problem is will we get anywhere near what we paid for him?
I'd offer him a two year deal here. I reckon he could be good for us in League 1 and the Championship if he's got clarity of his role. I don't think he's the brightest footballer. If he's told to pass and shoot when 18 yards from goal or to make his mind up and is supported by a decent Head Coach he'll be a good addition to the squad.
I'd be very interested to see how much he's on. I was surprised Angus MacDonald was on just under £7k a week. Given Thomas came with a significant transfer fee, I suspect prior to a possible drop under relegation he was on a fair chunk too. I very much hope we can manage to find a way to offload him and Schmidt. We'd obviously crystallise a massive loss, but at least we'd save on wages for another year.
