England's partnerships in this innings: 7, 5, 138, 7, 7, 5. Basically Root and Malan aside we're ******* awful.
Maybe we could just shuffle the players around …. Anderson and Leach to open the batting ? They can certainly hang around ! Only joking by the way
I think Bairstow would be ahead of Foakes if he was still there, but, as said previously, I am a big Foakes fan and surely he’ll be the regular England stumper very soon
We haven't been able to post decent first innings scores consistently for years. You can often get away with lower scores in England but in Australian conditions 400 is a minimum. Picking or resting Broad and Anderson the selection of a spinner, it's all irrelevant if you can't put runs on the board.
This has been the problem. I usually have a moan about T20 cricket but other test teams can make 350 so why can’t we? the pitched we play on aren’t great, 4 day cricket is generally an afterthought in England being played either in April or September. The ECB have prioritized winning a one day cup in recent years too, whats for sure is this isn’t an easy fix
Can't see it being fixed, test cricket (while always my favourite) just doesn't generate the interest and finance's that the one day game does. We just don't produce Batsmen who the temperament to play test cricket anymore.
I’d get Jack Russel out of retirement before playing Butler again at test level. But unlike his keeping He’s undroppable it seems. Very bizarre.
I agree, as a kid growing up now do you want to block all day, play test cricket for 10p or swing from the cheap seats and play T20 for a million quid! The point being though other teams seem to be able to both, I’m not sure if it’s just a dry patch. If we had 2 openers who could bat I’m sure the middle order would score more runs too….
It could turn around as you say only need a couple who can do it. Probably helps in Aus and India for example they have the weather to fit it all in. As you say we have a limited window for play and we have prioritised the white ball for a long time now.
To lose the last 8 wickets for 87 against an Aussie attack minus Hazlewood and Cummins in favourable batting conditions is beyond pathetic.
