So the only player capable for defending for over 100 balls was white ball specialist Buttler. Seems inevitable that Bairstow will come in for Pope in the next test, just a question of who keeps wicket. Woakes batted ok, but can't have him as a front line bowler for the sake of the 50 or 60 runs that he might give you over 2 innings. Though you could make a case for him opening the batting at the moment!
The opening pair for 3rd Test is main poser in my opinion. Hameed and Crawley Hameed and Malan Burns and Crawley Burns and Malan Hameed and Burns There are equal left and right handed players so who would you choose ? I’d go for Malan and Hameed bringing in Bairstow later in order as Woakes may lose out,but I think they’ll stick with current pair
Would probably be unfair to throw Crawley in now, given the amount of preparation he will have had. Burns would be some player if he held the bat facing the right way.
Might as well open with Bairstow, let him treat it like a ODI and hope it comes off to get us a good start. It can't go worse than the opening partnerships in the first two tests.
Leave Malan right where he is. Toss a coin on the openers none are good enough on current performance levels.
I wouldn't back Bairstow to last much longer than Burns did in the first innings at Brisbane, against a new red ball. Though putting Stokes or Woakes up there might not be the craziest thing
Burns would be an average player if he stood facing the right way. I'm convinced he's won a raffle to be England Opener.
I thought he’d call it a day after this tour but someone convinced me that he would play next summer and then bow out
Scored 3 test hundreds. Averaged over 40 against this attack in English conditions in the last home ashes. The talent is there, but he needs to make some adjustments to give himself more chance of getting in.
