There was a glassworks at Stairfoot on Wombwell lane, could be wrong but seem to remember it being called Rylands
When going through my late grandad paperwork there was a reference given to his father from Rylands glass, it appeared to be from when the factory was closing in the late 1920's, he'd worked there for over 37years going on the reference given.
Stairfoot....in 1929 the premises were taken over by Beatson Clark, I assume they were the ones recently knocked down on Hoyle Mill Lane.
We had a similar post not so long ago.... see this post... within this post is a link from Statistyke that gives you all the knowlege on Ryland.. here.. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/another-antiquity.301201/#post-2665978
Isn't the word codswallop derived from the stuff people drank from those bottles (Codd's wallop)? Sure I read that somewhere.
One of the "Memories of Barnsley" magazines had a substantial article about this place. Stairfoot, that car valet / body shop is a remnant of it.
You must be knocking on a bit if you can remember that. It became part of beatson Clark which was on hoyle mill in 1929. Got quite a history though.
The one on Wombwell Lane was tomlinsons Rylands had two factory's Ben had one near stearfoot roundabout Dan's was down hoylmill road
Bit nit picky granted, but Beatson Clarke was on Hoyle Mill Road in Stairfoot. I think The ‘border’ of Hoyle mill and Stairfoot is around where the old pit shaft still stands
