There was a glassworks at Stairfoot on Wombwell lane, could be wrong but seem to remember it being called Rylands

When going through my late grandad paperwork there was a reference given to his father from Rylands glass, it appeared to be from when the factory was closing in the late 1920's, he'd worked there for over 37years going on the reference given.

Stairfoot....in 1929 the premises were taken over by Beatson Clark, I assume they were the ones recently knocked down on Hoyle Mill Lane.

Isn't the word codswallop derived from the stuff people drank from those bottles (Codd's wallop)? Sure I read that somewhere.

Could be, I think it's the term used for waste glass. Has a Barnsley origin for sure.

One of the "Memories of Barnsley" magazines had a substantial article about this place. Stairfoot, that car valet / body shop is a remnant of it.

You must be knocking on a bit if you can remember that. It became part of beatson Clark which was on hoyle mill in 1929.
    Got quite a history though.

Bit nit picky granted, but Beatson Clarke was on Hoyle Mill Road in Stairfoot. I think The ‘border’ of Hoyle mill and Stairfoot is around where the old pit shaft still stands
