Merry Christmas everyone. Was just wondering what proportion of people have something other than turkey for dinner? We're having lamb as usual, as we all much prefer it to turkey, and as there will be 5-6 of us for dinner we're much less likely to be eating Christmas dinner leftovers for a week after. We haven't abandoned it completely though, as for the pigs in blankets I'm using turkey sausages from the local butcher!

Last time I did turkey as the main meal was when we had ten people over it was a bit dry. The turkey and bacon pie I made the next day from it was loads better.

Love a good fish finger. Ketchup or mayo? Personally, I like a 50/50 mix, with a dash of lemon juice and a handful of coriander. Ace!

We wanted duck, or maybe a turducken but parents have invited themselves and as my mam’s the world’s fussiest eater, everything now has to be about her. Never mind the fact she doesn’t speak to me all year and if I call her she makes an excuse after 5 mins to hang up every time, and for my birthday she just sent a text saying happy birthday rather than calling. My dad would be fine, he wouldn’t be too fussy and he calls me quite often but she makes him be her messenger.

After him telling me she wants to come here as ‘you’ve never invited her for Christmas dinner before’ (of course not with how fussy she is and they’ve never invited me there), I told him they could come here but might not like my cooking as I do it differently to her. (She’ll only eat the carrots and potatoes if done in the pressure cooker for an exact amount of minutes for example whereas I will be steaming the veg). Well, he phoned up again a few days ago to say she’d said can’t I cook it ‘the normal way’ as it’s a one-off. I got a bit cross here as ‘normal’ to them is not ‘normal’ to us, I don’t know how to cook it that way, it’s been 16 years since I’ve seen her cook it that way and if she wanted it a very specific way then she should have cooked and invited us. We’ve already changed the meat, the veg to one’s she likes, bought potatoes so she can have plain ones as well as roasties, bought coffee neither of us likes, bought OXO cubes as she has that in water for gravy, bought drinks she likes, and are eating it early at 1 o’clock on the dot for her. She can eat steamed veg!

Sorry, I needed that rant before I started the day.

That sounds grim, and not what you need on such a day.

My mums picky, ungrateful and impossible a lot of the time too and I’m afraid I deal with it with a mixture of sarcasm, just not listening and telling her you get what you’re given.

I’d like to say it works, but she’ll not change. But at least I don’t get wound up by it like I used to.

    Fingers crossed for you.
