    Barnsley 5-1 Worksop 1978.

11 of these ; Springet, Chambers, McCarthy, Saunders, Pugh, Little, Peachey, Clarke, Riley, Millar, Collins, Prendergast,

    Probably.

Clarke got the first goal if I remember correctly, no idea about the rest.

Can’t remember the 1st, but I can remember travelling to Marine and saw us lose 3-1 I think it was. Barry ‘Spud’ Murphy played that day. Probably mid 1970s

I was also at that game, although my first was the Everton cup tie in 1963?? The Port Vale game was exactly what I was expecting, as Vale were a team who, like Halifax, would put ten men behind the ball and hope for one lucky break to win 1-0. So it was. They took the lead in the first half with a free-kick by Jackie Mudie, the ex-Blackpool and Scotland star man. There was just one problem. There was the sound of a whistle AFTER Mudie had struck the ball, but while it was still in mid-flight. I thought that this was the reason Ray Wood left the ball and everyone expected the kick to be re-taken, but it wasn't. I never did establish whether it was the referee's whistle which sounded, or someone in the crowd, but the goal stood. We kept hammering away and the Vale hero was goalie Stuart Sharratt, who had a blinder and played like a piece of human elastic. I thought that he would go far professionally, but he didn't. I think that he may have trained as a teacher at Alsager College and might have gone into teaching as a profession. Anyway, he had an absolute stormer. We equalised through Dick Hewitt, who played left half that day. Such was his versatility that he could play wing half, inside forward, or winger. I remember the ball coming to him towards the left edge of the penalty area, having been only half-cleared by the Vale defence and he smote it home quite beautifully for 1-1, which is where the score stayed. We won the replay 3-1, as they were less defensive at home. Although the official record doesn't show it, I am convinced that Barry Swallow played centre-forward in the replay, replacing Barrie Thomas, who was showing an early sign of the injury which would end his career. Bettany, Hewitt and Parker scored our goals and we deserved to beat them by all accounts. It led to a big match draw against Cardiff City in round 3, which we drew with the last kick of the game by Johnny Evans. Ronnie Bird scored for Cardiff, as I recall and the game was played on a frozen and rock-hard pitch. I remember Bobby Brown, the Cardiff City centre forward, heading a cross down into the pitch with such force that it bounced up high enough to hit the crossbar and stay out. We lost 2-1 at Ninian Park in the replay, but Thomas and Evans had done enough to pay for their transfer fees in the additional income through the turnstiles. Happy days and special memories of a time when the club was clawing its way out of the abyss.

Barnsley 3-1 Bolton Wanderers at the start of 1988. I hadn't made it to an FA Cup game for the two seasons prior for reasons that escape me.

1-1 home draw with Bradford City in Dec 1973. It was also my first ever game. Mick Butler scored for us….naturally.

Cracking first cup game that. Still one of best performances I’ve seen from a Reds side that. We absolutely battered them. Not sure if I remember right but I think Gwyn Thomas may have broke his leg in that game too? Someone with a better memory than me will confirm lol.

It was my first season as a six-year-old and I remember nothing of it. My first ever game came a couple of months before that - a 0-0 draw against Bradford City. It was from the 1990/91 season onwards that I remember everything. I do recall going as a six-year-old and seven-year-old, and the old brewery stand, the sights and sounds, trying to see over the advertisement boards etc, and the fact that football was happening, and looking over at the West Stand and thinking it was glamorous because it had seats. But the actual games, events, players etc, not much of a memory until a year or so later.

He did. The confusion starts with actually who broke his leg - I think that thread ran for multiple pages several years ago.

Some bite in that midfield with Pugh and Little. Could do with one of those now!

Think it was a tackle from Graham Roberts. Two proper hard men of the day. Great player for us was Thomas. No frills but boy could he tackle.

3rd Round replay, played under the floodlights at Oakwell in January 1964 when we beat Scunthorpe United 3-2. Team was Williamson, Hopper, Brookes, Winstanley, Houghton, Leighton, Kerr, O'Hara, Byrne, Sheavills, Wood with the goals coming from Byrne (2) and O'Hara. That was the same cup run that saw us beaten by Manchester United 4-0 at Oakwell in the 5th round.

I always thought it was Johnny Evans who equalized against Port Vale.
