I'd say not. When he took over he was told he'd have to get rid of a few players if he wanted to bring them in. With Woodrow and Helik being "injured" there's two players also on their way out of the club. He'll have a midfielder and striker lined up. Nothing against Woodrow but I reckon he is an injured as I am. Him getting injured fit the narrative for freeing up a wage and bringing in his "first signing". Which will be inwardly as important as his "first victory". Also Woodrow was the most outspoken member of the team. Wouldn't surprise me if there is an element of him talking his way out of the team. As for midfield him not picking Hondermarck or Gomes is him posturing to the board that he needs midfielders. He doesn't. Something seriously wrong down there right now.
With our imminent drop to League One I can see us selling Woodrow and Helik and not replacing them. Maybe we will even switch to a consistent 4 at the back and slot Vita in at left back (after Poya's recent comments about him). J Williams Right Back. Anderson and Kitching in the centre. Sibbick, Halme and Moon back up centre-backs. Up front maybe we'll go with a two (I think we should, as we clearly aren't creating enough to justify a three). We then have Morris, Vic, Iseka, Oulare (lol) and Oduor (striker/not a striker) to choose from up front. We are in dire straits and desperately need a midfielder, but then everybody knows that. The prepping for League One starts now, and I can't see many, if any, incomings. Edit: agree with your post apart from not needing a midfielder, I think we need one experienced midfielder, and then have Hondermarck/Gomes fighting for the other spot.
Whitey said yesterday that we have 24 players registered. Don't know what that really means but Lovechild (never shortened a posters name to that) spotted that we've got 33 plus three others contracted to the club - so I've no idea who's not registered to play, and why they aren't. Either way, I agree that there's no point in buying anyone. Waste of time cos we're down. I'd try a few Hail Mary loans that don't involve us contributing much to wages because we won't - this means that said pool will be tiny.
I’m just referring to the position of strength comment, that he had that before taking the role after all he didn’t need to take it.
I get what you mean. That's why I digressed into my points about Hondermarck and Woodrow. It might be him saying "look sell Woodrow and I'll have xyz player". The point about Hondermarck not being selected will no doubt be Poya emphasising he needs a midfielder.
Next season should be fun with regards to options in midfield as it stands. Seemingly Herbie Kane will be off to pastures new (possibly Oxford if they were to get promoted). Gomes will be back at Man City. Palmer has yet to sign a contract so it's very possible that he won't be here next season. Between now and the beginning of next season Styles will have been sold. So out of the regular first teamers that have played this season, that leaves Benson & Hondermarck. Doesn't look very promising does it?
Or maybe he just doesn't rate Hondermarck as much to be a regular starter or his efforts in training fall below his standards. He was brought in for the U23's and I recall Devaney being a little critical about him.
On what I've seen thus far he's our best midfielder which is saying something based on the amount of game time he's had. Mind you the club has previous with midfielders. Moncur, Knasmullner, Mcgeehan, Mowatt, ICD, Kane and Mallan. It seems Hondermarck is another to add to that ever increasing list.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him released seeing he was only given a 12 month deal. He's been ok in the very few minutes he's played that ive seen. Has a bit of physicality which we've been hugely lacking and surprised he hasn't had a little more game time considering our weaknesses in that area.
I don't think it is all about inept coaching. I think the malaise around the club can only be broken by breaking up this squad. We might as well rebuild with a guy we've just appointed because we can't keep changing managers.
Although I agree with not putting effort in in training equals no place in the team, beggars can't be choosers and is take a gamble on Hondermark.
Perhaps the biggest revelation of the interview was that we got more information on Remy Vita in a few sentences than we've been able to ascertain from him being at the club for several months. I literally couldn't have said anything about his strengths, but would have had to guess that his backside is probably now well conditioned to getting splinters. His 'we were absolutely desperate to get him signed before the window closed' loan, and subsequent lack of game time, would have been one of the greatest head-scratching transfers in our recent history. However, thanks to Obbi Oulare, it's not even the one at the top of the list for this season.
