Winning one grand slam doesn’t make you the favourite to win every match. She’s barely played on tour and doesn’t have enough experience yet. She has the skill to be a top player, but needs a bit more time to learn how to handle different opponents. The media attention doesn’t help because she’ll be branded a failure at every given opportunity and that added pressure isn’t good for anyone.
I'm not surprised. She's had a very up and down career. It's either runs to the semis and finals, or first round exits.
She's British. We all know how much our gutter press like to celebrate our sportspeople in the good moments and savage them in the bad times.
Looking at her play today compared to the Kazak girl she played last week, its the difference between playing Southampton one week and Port Vale the next. BUT Raducanu definitely looks a lot better for having played last week it has to be said, still too many double faults on her serve even without much pressure.
That was a very tough first round match against an opponent with a proven track record. Danka Kovinić in the next round who's 98th in the world.
Because people eat it up. Certain members of this forum are shocking for it - the same people taking great delight in posting links to shitty media praising after a win and disparaging after a loss. The press only do it because it sells papers/online ads.
?? The us open wasn’t her first grand slam appearance. She got to the last sixteen at Wimbledon, had to stop due to a fitness/breathing issue. Her record in slams isn’t too shoddy overall though… Unless you just meant two in a row.
She's reserving her best for the slams at the moment. A first round loser in 3 of her 4 tour events since the US Open before today.
Must admit I am pleasantly shocked that she won - her preparation has been almost none existent and she is just recovered from Covid, In the warm up tournament she was comforably beaten first match and I didnt expect her to get past Stevens today who I am surprised isnt seeded. The fact she won a 3 setter is encouraging but I still wont be shocked if she is knocked out next round as she cant be at her best yet. She probably starts favourite against Kovinic but it wont be an easy match
Looking further ahead she could have Halep in round 3 and Muguruza in round 4. After today it doesn't get any easier just to reach the last eight.
A great win yeah - and a different pressure on Thursday. An opponent barely in the top 100, who she will be expected to beat. If she cuts out the basic errors (and finds a second serve), she’ll be ok in that match though
Struggling today, but I think we can see clearly enough that if she didn’t have the hand blisters she’d be comfortable in this match. Big shame. She hasn’t lost this quite yet though.
She's currently playing and lost the first set on a tie break to the French Open juniors champion. She can't catch a break as she's only won 7 out of 17 matches since the US Open. She's had more coach changes and medical time outs than wins.
She is only 19 years old. Done more in her short career than all bar Virginia Wade in British women's tennis.
