As previously mentioned, I'm starting a new post at Shaw Lane Sports Club next month. One activity I'm looking to introduce is Walking Football, for older male and female players. All abilities welcome, It's a great version of the sport and something I have got alot out of. A player I spoke to recently measured the distance he covers in Walking Football Vs regular 5 a side. He covers more distance, consistently in Walking Football. You really are constantly on the move, but at low impact, so less chance of injury. Anyway, if anyone is interested, the sessions will be daytime, day of week to be confirmed. I'll post the details up when I have them, but PM me if you want to register interest or state a preferred day of the week.
I would love to have my friend. I haven’t run for 3 years since the brain bleed but would have loved to get back playing, I can walk and run a few yards - this would have been ideal for me but I can’t do daytime unless I’m not at work.
I'd love to give this a go. I've played football, cricket and golf at a decent level but the knees are now knackered. I like walking and I like footy.
I'm in two minds on this. Never realised two years ago that I'd played my last game of football. Weak knee and arthritis (in my 40's) in my big toe meant that I was in agony six days after playing and lathered on Ibuprofen gel like it was going out of fashion. I still don't know if I could "walk" whilst playing football though, it'd just feel wrong. Has anyone else done it?
I've played and it's great fun. You can walk briskly and get a sweat on. It does feel like you're playing football.
Play regular on a Monday for about 5 years (50 in May), like you say you constantly move we love it, now tonight is full 6 a-side at Fit Reds
I know it says it's for older people so now I'm curious would younger people be at an advantage in walking football? Quicker reactions maybe? Or would it be pretty even?
Finding space, strength to hold off players and touch are the best attributes to have. Generally speed is neutralised.
I play Tuesday evening at Honeywell it’s good fun and surprisingly good exercise. I would be interested in playing during the day at Shaw Lane.
There may be other sessions elsewhere in the evening - I’ll try to find out. The pitches are booked up in the evening. Edit - just seen in this thread there is an evening session at Honeywell.
You get past that hurdle pretty quickly. You then focus on the other elements of the game which are suddenly more important. e.g. weight of pass. Finding space.
At our women's sessions we include younger players. On the whole, it works well. The problem comes if you have a newcomer / inexperienced player vs a player who has come from mainstream football. Often the power shots can be off putting for nee players. We just ask players to tone it down. In competition, you usually get age grouping to remove this. At Shaw Lane the proposal would be to include anyone who wants to play, and hope that common sense prevails! If enough people turn up, we can divide according to ability/ age/ experience.
